Aren't both white balance and image quality on the upper left dial? (They are on my D800). That might be a clue.

Yes they are. My ISO is limited as I set it in the menu before I shoot, and auto ISO is off. I usually have my left hand on the lens or tripod. I'll have to make a note of that and be aware that I might be doing that. It would be a little awkward for me as 90% of the time the camera has an old 500 or 600mm lens hanging off the front. Thanks, something to watch for.

Yes, you probably depressed the Qual button and rotated the command dial. I've done that thinking that I was changing bracketing only to find out that I shot some JPEGs instead of RAW.

As I replied to mtman, it is a possibility, but I preset the ISO in the menu. I shoot strictly in manual, and just change shutter speed or f stop. I know it is probably pretty dumb, but I really have not used 95% of the abilities the camera has. Digitals are amazing pieces of equipment, but having shot film for so many years I just set it up to replicate my old Nikons and Bronica's as that just come natural to me. But, so far the concusses is pointing towards that so I will have to make myself aware of it. Ughhh, more things to think about, but many thanks for pointing this out.

Ron, Admittedly, digital cameras do have a lot of whistles and bells. Like yourself, I work with manual, 95% of the time. There are numerous settings of which I'm aware, but choose not to use, as they don't serve a purpose to my work. Like yourself, I still use my Nikon F, Bronicas, Hasselblad, and 4x5. Digital is somewhat different, but once that difference is understood, it pretty much works the same. The biggest difference is exposure. I had to change my approach 180 degrees to shooting film. However, that made things work.

Bob,

" The biggest difference is exposure. I had to change my approach 180 degrees to shooting film"

That is interesting, I'd be interested in knowing how. I'm not too old to learn, just takes longer.

I have never heard of this happening unless you are inadvertently changing it in the menu, or, do you have custom settings that you are inadvertently changing?

Hi Jeff,

I have no custom setting. I only have my non cpu lenses, and the function button set to scroll through the list of lenses with sub dial. My menu is basically as a new camera is set up. I have not delved into the mysteries and wonders of what the camera can do. It took me a long time to wrap my mind around the D610, coming from my old film units.

So simple.

There are times when my wife will post one of my shots. Since she has the D810 she opens my card in DXO. She does not down load it to her computer as it is not her shot and works merrily away. She will usually put the card back in my camera when she is done. I format the card when I put it back in the camera, but if she puts it back in the camera I don't think of doing that. Oh, my camera is ready to go. Well, the card has a DXO side car, and it is either TIFF or JPEG, which ever she was working in. Why this changes the menu settings, I don't know, but it does. Tried it several time and it changes my menu each time. Should it? Is it doing the same as when you update you camera? I'll try to call Nikon this week and find out.
