I have no idea how, but something I am doing will reset my file format from NEF to TIFF. I shoot manual, so I rarely use the menu. When I do, it is usually to check the batteries, or add/delete an non cpu lens. Am I somehow pressing some button combo on the body that changes this? And yes, I did search google and do a search on the site and so far have found nothing that pertains to the camera changing the format. So far nothing in the "hidden setting or camera hacks".

Ron,
Could you specifically list the steps from your initial setting of NEF. Then.......

Also, are you able to take photos in your selected setting and somewhere along the line it changes? Or, does it change between setting, turning the camera off, then back on again?

I've a D800e and would try do duplicate your stated problem, but would like to know when this "reset" occurs.

If I understand what your asking, the camera is set to manual mode. I set it to NEF, max file size, CF card is the main card, ISO is limited to 50-600, FN button is programed to sub scroll wheel to change non cpu lenses, shutter button is set to release only. Body and grip buttons are matched. Batteries are set to use the grip first. I do have a problem in not being able to feel the shutter button due to lack of feeling, so just maybe I am pressing some of the other buttons on top trying to find it, but have not been able to duplicate it. I do use the depth of field button a lot, but it does not seem to be the culprit. As far as I can tell all other menu functions are factory as I did a reset when I got the camera back. I did check this with what I could determine from the manual.

Since I use all non cpu lenses, I try to be extra care full installing the lenses so as not to hit the cpu pins in the body.

I am able to take my shots in TIFF, but they all have a blue cast, and the white balance is reset to tungsten. If I recall, there is a way to reset the white balance using the body buttons, but cannot for the life of me find out where I saw this.

As far as when this occurs, it can happen in the middle of a shoot. I was taking moon shots last night, fired off a few, took the CF card in to check the shots, and they were NEF. Put the card back in, took a few more shots, (6) and the first was NEF, the last five were TIFF. Borrowed another card, formatted it, and the shots were TIFF, checked the menu and found that it was set to TIFF and WB to tungsten. Reset to NEF and Daylight WB, put in my card and Everything was fine.

Ron,
This was sort of information I was requesting. Unfortunately, it's not giving me the magic clue to jump on the solution. Like yourself, I use non AI lenses too, but not all that often. I also shoot the majority of my photos in manual. All of my images are NEF.

The one suggestion I'd be left with offering is to call Nikon Tech Support and give them this information and see if they can provide an answer. They are pretty technically astute and I've had good success with asking them. 1 800 645 6687

If I do find something, I'll write you a pm.

Oh, does Schweizer mean anything to you?

Hi Bob,

I figured I was going to have to call them sooner or later.

Humm, aircraft, Dr., family I knew back east. Memory a little foggy right now.

You are probably resetting the camera. Check what button combination you have to press to reset the camera and then check if that may fit with something you do when taking those photos.

Ron, the reason I asked was that the N4646W comes back as the tail number registered to a glider. Thought you might be the owner.

That was my tail #, but not related to the manufacture your are thinking about.

Last time I flew it, it became a glider, but she was a turbo commander. One heck of an aircraft.

Reset buttons are very awkward to reach, and reset to NEF+JEPG., erase all other data (non cpu lenses, date, time, copyright, ect.). Start menu as a new camera. Wish it would work for the mechanicals also, then you would have the Forever Camera.

Ron, turbo commanders pretty much glide like a rock. I'm glad you're here chatting about it.

I didn't have the twin, had the 112 turbo. Actually had an awesome glide ratio. Saved my butt. She was like a Timex, took a licking and kept on ticking. Had some great and memorable times with her.

Ron,
Very cool. Like I said, it's a great thing that it saved your butt.

Bob,

I got very lucky, in that I learned from a couple of great instructors. Do you punch holes in the sky?

Aren't both white balance and image quality on the upper left dial? (They are on my D800). That might be a clue.

Yes, you probably depressed the Qual button and rotated the command dial. I've done that thinking that I was changing bracketing only to find out that I shot some JPEGs instead of RAW.
