The higher elevation not only gives you more depth than I got, and it lets you show all that rampaging color, but also let you use that great curve in the river for compositional control. Very well designed image, oughta print and frame this one.
You are right, as wonderful as the river views are, it is hard to find the right "look" when trying to capture it photographically. From the corner where the three states (NY,NJ,PA) meet, to where it divides into two branches up river at Hancock NY most of the access is on the eastern side of the river. Except for a few places where the river twists and turns, you are shooting into the sun at river level. If you are at one of those spots when the light is right, you can get decent shots. This year I was lucky.
