I like everything about the shot. The colors the angle from where you took this picture. Don't fight Mother Nature. R G knocked down the green off the water but even that was in the "acceptable" range. It has been many years since I was up there and was never lucky enough to see such a terrific scene.

The night I arrived at Niagara featured as crazy a sunset as I've ever seen, one of those that colors the very air, so all the people look orange, the concrete is orange - and the water open to the sunset was tinged orange. Mixed with the deep aqua color of this water, the orange turned the water a strange and awkward purple. I do not know what to do with these images, so I hope others will suggest, or try their hand. The more true color of the water can be seen in the areas that the angle protected from the orange. But the sky was amazing. What do I do now?

Dear Minnie, Leave it alone! I see nothing in this picture that looks over cooked or unrealistic. Of course I am a Canadian and I am used to clear skies and bright sunsets. To my eye every colour and tint is completely believable and totally true to nature. The green at the top edge of the waterfall is the perfectly normal effect when the water starts to aerate as it goes over the edge - just before it fills with air bubbles and turns white. The purple tint to the water is the reflection of the red/orange sky on the dark blue water and is perfectly normal. I love the hint of peach in the mist in the lower left corner. I would hate to see you take the edge off of this to meet the expectations of viewers who were not there. In your response to Billy you said that you had other shots with the same problem - what problem? I would like to know why the unusual format. Did you cut off one side or the other due to distractions?
Cheers, Don
P.S. If you like I can post a sunset from the Galapagos which will blow R.G.'s socks off.

Thanks, Don, I appreciate this sound advice which from a Real Canadian is of top value!

I could see where the purple tint was coming from but it looked strange in contrast with the blue-green. I did not think about the aeration effect. I want it to "feel" right and retain the otherworldly effect I saw and tried to capture. I will just have to make my mind up about it, mitigate or not.

Format wise, yes, I could not shoot over the bushes at this point, so ended up with the odd crop. I have trouble confining myself to the normal crop ratios (seems like I have trouble following rules in general) which is what has led me to learn to cut my own mattes, so I can butcher the accepted ratios at will

Do show us your Galapagos sunset, many of us will never get our own chance to see one!

Thanks for the encouragement and the reminder to let Mother Nature do her thing!

I had never seen such a sunset there before in other visits, either. We were trapped in the border crossing line for 2 hrs, watched this sky develop, and got there barely in time to see the Big Show, so I didn't have time to secure a favored location as there were hundreds lined up entranced by it. I took up a spot with some scraggly shrubs in the way, nearest the edge of the drop. I felt privileged to just see it, but of course had to try to capture it too. I appreciate everyone's help.

I find the original completely acceptable. If I did anything it would be cropping minniev. One way to get the water where you want it.....Ps go to image, adjustments, selective color, I tried reducing magenta with red selected and thought it did well....add mask, invert and paint back in where you want, adjust opacity to taste.

Thanks Frank. If you want to show me a crop, please know I'll appreciate it!

What you describe is pretty much what I did on the second version, but I think I went a bit too far in curing its ailments. I'll revisit.

No changes needed in my opinion. Looks great to me - wish I could have seen it live but your photo offers a lot of compensation for not being there.

Thank you!

It was one of the most dramatic sunsets I've run across, because of the color and the location.

WOW...I looked at the double download of this, and just can't figure why you would want to change anything!! The reason we look at sunsets is to see the vast array of colors that can be achieved, and this is a good example!! I like it!!

Hmm. I don't think I posted it in any section other than here in FYC??

This looks like part of a solution for this set, so I'm curious as to how it was done?

Thank you. I am a little less troubled about it since several folks like it as is. But still looking at some minor modifications to mitigate some of the purple. Some of the other shots have even more purple in the river-water than this one.

Minnie, I'm going with mcveed on this one. I would leave it as is. I'm amazed at what appears to be a lower angle shot to me. This is one image that is unique because of what Mother Nature handed you. Take it as a gift because its one thats far and few between, so again, I would take it as is, for that reason alone.

It was cloudy and rainy while were there on the Canadian side so we didn't stay very long in the area, not to mention trying to shoot around all the tourists with their selfie sticks.

Thanks Dave, I'm still tinkering with the handful of shots I got that evening, and some the next day too when the light was interesting/challenging though not orange. That includes one with the selfie sticks! Wow, what a conglomerate of people! I thought of you and hoped you did justice to that polyglot of cultures and "looks".

I shot from right on the edge, through the bars but had to crop a bit due to the sumac bushes that run outside the guard rail. In some other shots, I just let the sumacs do their own thing.

Made a selection of the foreground scene minus the sky. Used a photo filter to eliminate the colored hue.
On upload, I see there has been a change in the sky color which I have no explanation for, but believe the filter worked on the blues in the photo instead of just the selection. Back to the drawing board on a remedy for this.

The sky color changed on the download of your photo. No explanation for this, but if someone has an answer I would like to hear it.

I agree with those who say don't change. This is a truly remarkable phenomenon of nature and one I think cannot be improved on. I have some photos that have been untouched but the colours are so saturated because the air was so clear that people think they are photoshopped! When this happens naturally, why do we want to dial it back. When it doesn't happen naturally, we try to dial it up to this. Weird concept.
