I retired about 7 years ago and never looked back. I am able to devote all the time I want to photography. I have to say, however, I really enjoy shooting my 7 year old grandson's hockey games. Good luck and welcome. There are many friendly folks here with a lot of knowledge who will freely share that knowledge with you. Remember, the only dumb question is the one not asked.

Probably majority of people here are Nikon and you'll get good advice.

Camera is great. Your knowledge is much more important than your gear at this stage. Concentrate on learning how to "write with light"... Look at thousands of great photos for inspiration.
Read the poorly translated camera manual *thoroughly* a few times.
Test every setting and menu selection on your camera and examine the results.
Watch YouTube "how to" videos on photography.

Welcome! Good camera; just don't go crazy buying lenses. Probably best to get the 18-300 lens and see which focal lengths you normally are using.

The D5300 is a fine camera. I love mine, especially the flippy LCD.
