I am wondering why the better Digital Periodicals that cover photog techniques and PPing are from the UK? Does anyone have an opinion on that?

Sometimes I wonder the same thing. Maybe we yanks are just too immediate gratification oriented to get deep into all the bits required to get a really good photo? The UK does have some fine photog magazines and I'm guilty of buying them in airports frequently. Maybe it is just because they are different?

Wouldn't know. I tried some, but they were really expensive ($15-20) and I couldn't understand a word.

I subscribe to a couple of the British Mags, Digital Camera and Digital Photo. Expensive but worth it. My cousin who lives in London says because the Brits have less cash to spend on "stuff" they really want to know how to use the "stuff" they already own. Hence, the greater depth and detail in the articles. And don't forget the "extras" like pocket guides to various styles, DVDs with tons of stock photos, tips and techniques, and the like.

Sometimes you can find someone selling them on ebay trying to recoup some of their money, thats where I get mine.

That's one way of looking at it. Another is that they're not as willing to waste their money on illusory 'upgrades' -- or to put things they can't afford on credit cards. As far as I know, average US personal debt is about 50% higher than average UK personal debt, though such figures are always slippery.

Cheers,

R.

You might want to look at Amateur Photographer as well, http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/ Unfortunately, because it's a weekly, the subscription is rather high to the US because of postage: it's currently on offer at $221.25 a year for 52 issues. There's a lot on the web site, though, and you might find my collected columns mildly interesting: http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/archive/534666/the-final-frame-roger-hicks

The publishers cater to what the buying readers want to see. I actually suspect that the readers in one area are more interested in excellent craft than the readers in another. Even the magazines from Canada are superior (my personal opinion) than most published in the US.

Quite possibly the three best in the U.S. are: Photo Techniques, Aperture and Lenswork. Again, this is just my opinion. Lenswork is only available through subscription, not on the news stand. Of the three, only Photo Techniques offers tutorials, and they are very limited.

Bill, was it English that was giving you problems? :-) I agree, very expensive. I guess we are being taxed to support the royal family.
