Assuming there are no licensing issues, I would agree with the general consensus and accept the CS3. I have been using that software for about a year now and have still not tapped into it's full potential. Another issue that has been touched here slightly is what computer you are putting the software on. One of the reasons I am using CS3 is because my current computer does not have the processing power to handle CS5. Unless you have a reasonably new computer you would need to check the specification requirements on the Adobe website and make sure your computer matches the specifications of CS6 (or CS5 for that matter) before you upgrade or purchase new software.

I have a chance to get cs3 from a friend who doesn't need it anymore....is there that big of a difference between the two that should keep me from getting cs3 ??....... BTW..cs3 is a no charge from my friend.

Get CS3, then upgrade to CS6 for $200.

I haven't used another's software and do not know the answer to this question.....but how would he activate/register this software - with his friends serial no - in his name or his friend's. He wouldn't be able to upgrade on his own account.

Nobody is ever "required" to register their purchased software to make it work. However, if you don't register, the software vendor may not support you with any technical or consumer related questions.

Like Cliff said, the original owner will need to "deactivate" the software first. Then you can install and activate it on another PC. Once active, you can register online or by phone. Adobe loves people to register (even if you don't own their stuff), so they can keep you "informed" of new releases and updates. They want your information to build their huge customer marketing database.

Activation and registration are separate functions. You can activate without registering, but to activate, you will need the serial number.

I think the question is Activation - not registration - then reading the link knightmarian posted - which is the license agreement - it would appear the original owner would have to deactivate his or her copy and it also seems to read that they give up their rights to upgrade. One REALLY needs to call Adobe on this.

Two computers, not two owners.

Two computers, not two owners.

How about Siamese twins? One has a Mac and the other has a Windows machine.

I went from CS3 to CS5 but skipped CS4. I really like CS5 and am so glad I did move up. The contant aware tool to me made it worth the upgrade. Don't know anything about the new CS6. Also because the product is registered to your friend there may be a problem

Your friend may have to de-register his version before you can load it.

According to the chat session I just had with Adobe, the original owner of the software needs to contact Adobe to transfer legal ownership IN ADDITION to deactivating their copy of software.

Regarding upgrade qualifications: as long as the original owner transfers ALL prior version over to the new owner, Adobe will honor the upgrade price. If, however, the original owner just gives his friend a copy of an upgraded version, it will NOT be honored by Adobe for further upgrade discounts.

Now... would I be surprised if you got a different answer from another Adobe rep? No. Their goal is to sell and promote, not to accommodate a complicated licensing transaction.

There you go! I knew there would be a simple solution. And if you do all that, and it still doesn't work, you can just buy the newest version outright. No problem.

Or, is The Pirate Bay still in operation?
