I have a chance to get cs3 from a friend who doesn't need it anymore....is there that big of a difference between the two that should keep me from getting cs3 ??....... BTW..cs3 is a no charge from my friend.

I'm not a pro but it seems that 5 is two more than 3 so...that would be the difference. :)

I would get the CS3 use it for awhile and then look at CS5 and see if there is enough of an advantage to CS5 to make the purchase. I used CS3 and liked it but went to CS5 about two months ago to take advantage of the content aware feature which makes removal of objects easier

The price of the CS3 seems right, and if that is the most important consideration go with it.

CS3 to CS4 wasn't that big a jump in features, but the jump from CS4 to CS5 was. Content aware and the mini-bridge were big improvements in CS5. And both have been enhanced considerably in CS6.

CS3 for free! Yeah! Then see where you want to go from there and how much you use it. Less to learn initially and then the upgrade to CS5 (or CS6) will be easier than starting out with it.

Get CS3, then upgrade to CS6 for $200.

Do you need updated CRAW? A new camera won't work.
If he is upgrading you can't do the upgrade either.
Learn on the CS3 and then buy CS6 later if you like it.

I guess I'm having a hard time understanding the question... I'll stay out of this one.

I am not sure and it is not up to me to check, but there are licensing issues here. Your friend has the original license so if you install it you need a serial #. But that is HIS number and registered on his computer. At the very least he needs to deactivate his license.

I would definitely call Adobe to check the legality here as there is a limit to how many computers this can be installed on.

I am not suggesting it cannot be done, but you want to be legal.

Back in the day before Adobe got smart, folks would pirate PS all the time. Before I would help anyone with the program, they had to prove the copy they had was a legal copy owned by them and not copied from a friend.

If you have a new camera, the Camera RAW with CS3 won't read the RAW files.
If the friend is upgrading, the OP can activate I think, but cannot ever upgrade.

Unless you have been using PS for a couple of years and are proficient with it, CS3 will do you fine. PS is a very complex program. If you can manage to get CS3 for nothing and can install it. go for it, you can always upgrade to CS5 if you feel the necessity. You will find that any of the PS versions have far more facilities than you probably will ever need. You can alway suppliment with plug-ins to fill in the gaps. I still use CS3 on my old laptop and CS5 on my latest laptop. CS5 requires more Ram and HDD than CS3, so this could be an issue also. That is my opinion anyway. Good luck whichever way you go. Rico

I think you are right also. If either of you try to upgrade now or in the future, you may find that to be an issue.

Depending on how Adobe works things, you might be able to buy the upgrade to CS6 for $199. They are allowing upgrades for CS3, 4, and 5. The question becomes who is the actual owner of that CS3?
