Hey Everyone!

As you can tell by my User Name "photogrow"... I have a lot to learn!

Not a beginner, but definitely not a pro... I'm a frequent hobbyist that wants to get better.

I currently have a Canon 70D and a Canon 7D Mark II. I have the utilitarian "comes in the box" lenses and have rented lenses from time to time from Borrow Lenses.

I think it's time for me to have the freedom of spontaneity by owning some real lenses.

IMAGE STABILIZATION is very important.

I like to shoot:

Landscape
Close-up
People
Animals

I want to learn:

Night photography
And now sports, since my daughter's boyfriend was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons!!!

So help me, help me!!!

Let's say I'm willing to spend up to $2000 each lens, but I want them to really be almost everything I might need.

If you could on choose three lenses in the world... What would they be???

And if I could be so bold... What full frame Canon body would you choose?

Thank you so much!!!

The 50mm will be fine for landscape and people. To add to that, and I am a Nikon shooter, so I will only suggest rough mm lengths, as I am not familiar to what Canon offers. That said, a 60 to 105mm macro lens would be great for close up, it would also be a great lens for portraits. around a 24-120mm zoom lens for landscape and general use. and finally a 150-600mm sigma sport for wildlife. those three lenses should be under $2000 each. to save a few bucks, you could check with B&H Photo or KEH as reputable dealers for used lenses.

I don't have a DSLR. I learned not to with Nikon 35mm gear. I'm a M4/3 Panasonic junky. I have a 14-140 and 100-400. Total weight, including a carbon tripod is 8 pounds. I get 28 to 800 mm full frame equivalent. I think they are "real" lenses! Both lenses have "Dual Image Stabilization" on the newer Panasonic cameras. I have about $3400 spent, total. "Spontaneity" comes with light and mobile. I'm pretty sure I shoot Landscapes, Close-ups, People, Animals and could do Sports and Nighttime.

When I travel lighter than normal with full frame, 17-35 F2.8, 28-70 F2.8, 70-200 F2.8

Going really light - DX, 12-24 F4.0, 35 F1.8, 18-200 F3.5/5.6

EF 16-35 f/4 L Excellent for landscapes and interiors.
EF 24-105 f/4 L Excellent walk-around lens, although the soon-to-be-announced Mk II version will probably be better.
EF 100-400 L II A no-brainer with the 7DII, IMO. Mine is rarely off my 7DII. Might be pushing your budget a bit but the other two are under budget, so it evens out.
Full frame Canon? My 6D has done a fine job for me for the past 3 yrs, but I am considering the new 5D Mk IV as a possibility. With the 7DII that you have already you really don't anything more expensive then the 6D in order to have all your bases covered.

I shoot canon.
People, portraits, sports, animals: I have the the 70-200 2.8 on my crop 1d mk4. I often use the 1.4 extender.
landscape: for a wide angle of view: I have the 24-70 2.8 on my full frame 1ds mk 3. Off the top of my head I don't recall if it has IS or not. but I have shot collegiate sports with it. It's great for those up close encounters in Track & Field and basketball.
Close up: I have the 100 2.8.
4th lens. the 50 1.8 will get you by in low light where you don't want to use flash.
Why? These are fantastic lenses. The 1.4 extender is a little soft, the 2x is too soft for my liking. I buy lenses that are 2.8 or faster because I do my share of low light photography.

If IS is really important, even on wide angle lenses, then:

24-70 f4.0L IS or 24-105 f4.0L IS
70-200 f2.8L IS Mk2
100-400 f4.5-5.6L IS Mk2
5D Mk4

If you can give up IS, substitute 24-70 f2.8L for the 24-70 f4.0 or 24-105

I was looking at that Sigma 150-600. How are you liking that? Ever use it with the extender/teleconverter?

Which full frame do you normally use? I've rented the 16-35 F2.8 several times. I really like it except that screw that seems to often come lose under the band. Cost me an amazing aurora borealis in Iceland. My first real photo trip and the lens wouldn't turn all night. I pulled the band off the next day and the screw was loose and had jammed sideways underneath. I know that rental lenses get overused, but I found out later that it seems to be a problem with that lens. Have you had that issue? I checked it every night before I went out after that. Quite the learning curve on that trip!... They're coming out with a newer version. I'm thinking I should wait for it to come out, don't you? I mean I know about that problem now, but maybe they have that screw issue fixed. I read that some people actually had to finally glue that screw in! Aaaaaargh!

So... Yeah... What about that 5D Mark IV??!! Looks like a lot of exciting stuff in there!!! Also looks like a big learning curve for someone at my level? What do you think? .... I really like that 16-35, but I've rented the F2.8. I had a major problem with a set screw that kept coming loose under the band. They're coming out with a new one soon. Might wait for that, but still no IS... :-/

IS is on the 24-70 F4, not the F2.8. :-/ ... So when you say the extender is soft, you mean fuzzy (focus)? I'm interested in extenders but am concerned about putting it on the wrong lenses and damaging them. Are they only for the "L" lenses? Or others?

Thank you for that! ... You listed the 5D Mk4--is it out yet?
