Two weeks ago, I was on a photo shoot. I was just setting up when "it" happened. I dropped my camera. When I heard the sound of glass breaking, I feared the worst, the lens. I got "lucky", I only lost my polarizer and uv filter. I was very happy it was not my wide angle lens. I had my lens cap on, but I guess it got knocked off the filters took the hit. I have always used a uv filter and now I am glad I use one.
Both filters will be replaced next week. I won't complain about the cost, because I could have been looking at a new lens.

This can't be true. Hundreds of UHH posters swear that filters offer absolutely no protection against breakage. Luckily, I'm proud not to be one of them.

I'm one who always uses a lens hood. that might have protected the lens and the filters.

Welcome to the club. The exclusive group who's members have accidentally drop a camera or lens and the front of the lens was spared by a filter. All I can say for the disbelievers and naysayer is, you don't know what you're talking about until it's happened to you.
As for hoods, yes, they will protect if they are in place but there are times when they're not always in place.

The lens did not fit in the side pouch of my bag, so I have to attach it after I take it out. I was teaching for it when I dropped it.

It's funny to think about, but we don't know exactly how it hit. It's possible that since the lens body is tougher than a filter ring, maybe without any filters there would have been no damage.
That said, I use filters on my lenses.

Sure it can Jim Bob , the filter rings absorb the initial shock thus saving the lens, but then this will not always be the case it really depends of the surface the gear lands on, the distance it falls and the luck of the draw.
I dropped a Nikon D1x a few years ago, it landed on asphalt from a height of about 3 ft. Lens okay, filter ring bent glass broken, camera wrecked!!! upper metal housing broken, camera is not a paper weight because of it age at the time it was cost prohibitive to have it repaired.

The same thing happened with my 24-70 Nikon. But it felt funny in use. I ended up sending it in for Nikon to do a checkup and clean on it. they replace some parts.

My son just got back from vacation and the first thing he told me was he dropped his new lens. Fortunately he had a UV filter on it. Yep, the filter broke but it saved the glass.
All my lenses have UV filters and most have CPL's as well.

good for you. it is always much less expensive to replace filters and they mitigate the inconvenience of having to send the lens in for a new front element, not to mention the time without it.

Did you have the CPL stacked on the UV filter? Stacking is generally considered a bad idea.
