I guess it proves that the industry has made excellent optics for a long time? Or am I missing something? Isn't it widely known that reverse mounting a lens on an extension tube produces large magnifications?

Usually reverse mounting a lens on an extension tube produces large magnifications but very little depth of field. Anyhow, I removed the lens mount to save almost an inch space, so I was able to take those images with roughly a working distance from 1"-3". that was plenty of room. Next time I will actually measure the distance.
This Sony lens if I could remember where and when did I get it. It may be at that time when the audio & video dept. of the hospital where I was working went for remodeling and throwing out some equipment, I asked for it, and got it. It's a very beautiful nice all metal silver lens, all the turning rings are very smooth, and the optical glasses are clean, it looks like only have one coating (amber color), so it shows a little chromatic aberration.

Perhaps less widely known is that many, if not most, otherwise mediocre lenses exhibit excellent optical quality when reversed.

I do recall that, now that you mention it! More fun and games with optics!

Yes, reversing a lens does produce magnified images and some are really good (the Nikon 50mm f1.8 AF is excellent). Not all produce a good image though; some are pretty bad in fact. All, lenses act differently.
