Recently, I looked through my collection of old lens and glass, I picked up this silver Sony 20-8-mm f2.5 video camera lens from the storage box, I tried it reversed mounting on my Df with a 11mm extension tube, I don't believe the result. Here's the shots:

The first one: lens set at 80mm with 1.8x magnification.
Second one: lens set at 50mm with 3.2x magnification.
Third one: lens set at 20mm with 5.5x magnification.
The object was the 'logo' of a US 2 dollar bill. All shots were done by mounting the camera on a enlarger stand.

I am always collecting old lenses and loose optical glasses, I didn't buy them, some were given by friends, and some were picked up from discarded optical equipment while I was working in the hospital for 22 years. I am just loving to mess around with optical glasses, it's my another hobby.

Been nudger-ing my husband to get into storage So I can go through our (really) old photo equipment. Maybe this will give him added incentive.

This is an interesting idea. Consider posting similar photographs in the UHH True Macro-Photography Forum at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html .
A photo of your set-up would also be educational.

Thank you! I think posting this on the general forum will get more people to involve to create new idea. I also used some other collection to make telescope (of course small one), close-up lenses (achromat Diopter 7-9), it's just for experiencing and fun.
The set up is really simple, the filter size of the Sony lens is just the same as the popular 52mm of the Nikon lens. I just reversed mounted it to a manual 11mm extension tube (one part of the tube set, and I didn't want to use the other higher number one) with a reverse ring (Nikon mount), That's it. I mount the whole set up on an old enlarger stand with spot lighting on both side. focusing was not a problem, the lens gave me the working distance from almost 3" to 1". (80mm---20mm) but the DOF was so shallow, I had to use live- view to focus precisely. But it was a problem, after that I had to clean my sensor because of the sensor attracting dust during LV.

You have just shown that old glass can be as good or better than the new ones on the market. This may wake some up to realize that the newest offerings by lens makers are not necessarily the best options out there. I know that many of Nikon's best lenses were made up to 60 years ago.

I guess it proves that the industry has made excellent optics for a long time? Or am I missing something? Isn't it widely known that reverse mounting a lens on an extension tube produces large magnifications?

Perhaps less widely known is that many, if not most, otherwise mediocre lenses exhibit excellent optical quality when reversed.
