Epson 2550 Printer

I'm thinking about replacing an older HP printer, scanner, copier. I've heard great things about Epson printers for producing color prints and I'd like to stay with a multi-function device. Any comments pro and con will be welcomed.

A multifunction printer will never do a great job of printing photos compared to a dedicated photo printer. the 2550 only has four colors of ink where the Epson printers which do high quality photo prints have a lot more.

Keep the HP for 'routine' use & get an Epson PHOTO PRINTER to PRINT PHOTOS!!! Or use a lab to print them - consider how many prints you can buy for the price of a new printer alone, then add in the supplies you'll be needing.

I owned a multifunction printer I bought in 2009. Never again will I buy another one. The Epson printers are very good. But consider other opinions too.

I agree with this. Watch craigslist, you can usually pick up Canon Pixma Pro 100's (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRINT/canon-pro-100/) brand new for a steal with a pack of 13x19 paper as they are commonly given away (after rebate) when bought with a higher end Canon camera. Fantastic printer and allows you print up to 13x19. I paid $150 for mine in Wisconsin. These sell for $400 new.

I prefer HP multi function printers, as their software is very, very simple and unobtrusive for every day printing, copying and faxing. I agree with JohnSwanda, a multi function will never give you the output of a dedicated photo printer.
I had an Epson Stylus for years, and when the last one died I went with a Canon Pro-100 so I could do up to 13x19 prints. IMHO, far superior performance vs the Epson Stylus.

Seeking a printer recommendation is like seeking a camera recommendation: Everyone has a different opinion!
I have owned Nikon camera gear since 1972, but decided on a Canon Pro-100 as the best color photograph printer for my needs. I routinely print 13x19-inch borderless prints.
The Canon Pro-100 has eight (8) different color cartridges to reproduce the subtle hues captured by modern digital cameras.

Thanks for the great feedback. Looks like there is a lot of support for the Canon Pro-100. How about some Epson model recommendations for a straight photo printer? I'm not opposed to a photo-only printer...just have to find a place for it in my small office/studio.

Although I have only had my Epson 2550 a short time, I love it. Prior to this, I have replaced numerous printers because the ink cartridges lasted 3.2 seconds. Could not print out high quality photos without running out of ink. Now I have a printer with tanks that can go and go and go. The cost of the ink refills is considerably cheaper than the former cartridges, too. None of my photos goes to a gallery (as I suppose the majority of the photos printed by HOG members), so I don't think we have to worry about purchasing $800+ professional printers.
Considering that most hobbyist and pro photographers don't think twice about spending a fortune in GAS attacks, why would a $300 printer make waves? Go for it. If you purchase it at Best Buy, you will receive credit on your frequent buyer program which can be used for ink. Win-Win!

Have owned an Epson stylus photo 2200 for several years.s Not cheap. Takes 7 ink cartridges and does a great job!

If you are happy with your print quality, that's fine. But nobody here is talking about $800 printers. A low end Canon or Epson dedicated photo printer will beat the print quality of a four color multipurpose printer by quite a bit.

epson r 2000 with 8 xtra large cartridges and bw ink and gloss optimizer; awesome color and bw on 13x19 epson specialty papers and fairly inexpensive.

Before much advice can be given, you should tell us what you're willing to spend. The Canon mentioned is a great deal. There are also some great Epson printers but a idea of cost would help.
