I will be going to Africa in Sept. and I am traveling with only "Carry On" consisting of my Lowepro Flipside 500 and a regular piece of "Carry On" luggage). If you're traveling light (re:clothing) , here is a tip. I was going to pack my Lowepro with all of my photo gear (Nikons all 200-400; 70-200; (2)18-300; two bodies; binoculars; monopod; and some smaller photo items. I realized that my photo gear would all fit into my regular piece of carry-on luggage so, I will be putting my gear into my regular luggage and stuffing the Lowepro with clothing. WHY? Weight! Instead of carrying all the photo weight, I'll be wheeling it through the airport. When I get to my destination in Kenya, I'll switch everything around and use the Lowepro on the safari. PS. DO NOT PACK YOUR LENS WITH A CAMERA ATTACHED. If there is pressure placed upon the lens while trying to stuff things in, it could possibly place an undo strain on the lens/body connection.

Go to the camera store and look at them. Chances are you'll pick one today, and another next week, and another till you wind up with about 6 of them like me.

I also have a LowePro Flipside 500. Good sized bag but not to big plus you open the bag from the back so no one can steal your cameras when the bag is on your back.

I have the LowePro ProTactic 450 AW which will fit all of what you're describing plus more. Very sturdy build with plenty of quick access points and attachment point for tripod/monopod.

thank you

I always use a Yogi Bear pillow case tied up with orange rope to match the piece I hold my ankle flapping pin stripe pants up with. The pillow case will hold all ya gear plus the usual assortment of drugs and booze flasks essential on any shoot. The advantage to this type of bag is if worn with a pink hand knitted sweater over a striped pajama top with a Davy Crockett hat worn so the tail is at the front and a rope soled boating shoe on one foot and a wellington boot on the other you will breeze straight thru security wherever you wish to shoot.
No one will search your bag and you will just be able to walk into the press section or areas reserved for photographers. You can light up a bong and no one will come near you. It unconventional for sure but will get you results.
Wallmart has a matching set of Yogi or Donald Duck pillow cases for $9.99 a set

It may not be in your plans now, but you might want to consider a bag that meets airline carry-on bag demensions.

Get one a little bigger than you think you need. That way you will have room for those extra gadgets and new stuff that you add later.

Check out the Lowepro Airport Essentials backpack. I have had one for a couple of years, and have had good experiences using it with similar equipment.

UPDATE:
I have since taken a closer look at my Lowepro and am not sure it will fit under the seat in front of me. I will be using a THINK TANK Streetwalker (it's a backpack) that will hold my equipment (in fact, the ad shows both of my lenses) and will flatten down (when filled with clothing) to something that will fit under the seat in front of me.

This backpack will fit under the seat, which is the only place for it - I've seen people cram their giant suitcases into the overhead with such force that only a Pelican or Ape case could withstand it.

Look at Mindshift gear, Moose Peterson has put out an addition for them. They are part of the Think Tank brand.

Thank you all for the great suggestions, I went with the Tamrac 27. it seems to fit all my needs, now I just need to convince my wife that it would be good exercise for her to carry it instead of me, lol.
