I absolutely agree. You wouldn't be referring to anything like this would you? That would be a very bad idea!

Somewhat less appealing the closer one gets...

Not bad for your average street Hook. You never see the good looking ones, nor could most afford them anyway.

The STD's scare me more than other problems though

The Canon 15-85 is a fantastic lens for just about everything!!!

I will be in Amsterdam in a couple of months and will be going into the Red Light District, on a tour in the evening. What can, and cannot be photographed? I don't know if there are any laws regarding photography in the area, and don't want to be confronted by unhappy people, but also hope to capture the scenes of the area as they exist today.

Any suggestions on ISO and settings to make my photos pop? I use a Canon Rebel T1I, with a 15-85mm, f3.5-5.6, which seems to be a good all around lens for me. Thanks for any input.

I'm sure your tour guide has heard that question before.

If you are going on a tour you will be told what you can or cannot do. If you are on your own leave your camera at home. The main rules are that you must not image any of the women, and they mean this. The whole area is protected by a private security company and they are quite firm. You may also have a problem with a camera if some of the furtive little people making use of the services offered take exception, especially as it would seem any number of them have wives who may not approve of what their spouse is up to.
We got involved with this on a workshop in 'Old Amsterdam' and very quickly decided Kanalstraadt and the surrounding areas were off limits. This was a couple of years ago.

Totally agree. I was there a few years ago without camera, no regrets. There are many more nice areas in Amsterdam to visit and to photograph.

Do not use your camera around the windows and doors of the brothels. If you do it could end up in the canal. You can shoot everywhere else.
If you can go to the roof of the Double Tree by Hilton and have a drink. This is an excellent spot to shot the city skyline at night.
Also, use the bus system and go to Eden and Volendam. Easy bus ride and great towns for photos.

Be sure and photograph the characters in Dam Square and folks on boats traveling the canals below the bridge, as far as the "Red Light District", when I was there way back, didn't take my camera along..

Was in Amsterdam many years ago with my Super 8 film equipment and took movies of pretty much anything I wanted, where I wanted, and when I wanted. No one objected. And none of the girls dodged to get out of the way or seemed unhappy with my filming. Also took pics of the girls in the windows of their houses and none left the window. Sorry it was so long ago.

Please don't take photos of children either. Commonsense dictates and so follow your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable about a situation, that is a good warning sign that what you are doing is not acceptable in that country, so just be careful and you will enjoy Amsterdam.

I would strongly suggest checking with the local law enforcement. When visiting foreign countries, laws we take for granted are not observed by some countries. Better to be safe that sorry.

An excellent source of information is the tourist office; If arriving by train in Amsterdam, there is one just outside the Centraal Station (Main Railway Station).

Beside a map of the Red Light District, there is some interesting information on this site:

You are going on a tour and they won't tell you the rules?

There are a lot of photo opportunities in Amsterdam without going to the Red Light District. I was there last October and the night my tour was scheduled to go it rained hard. Passed on the tour and didn't miss a thing and my camera stayed dry. It's a great place but watch your equipment for thieves. Enjoy the trip! 😀
