I will be in Amsterdam in a couple of months and will be going into the Red Light District, on a tour in the evening. What can, and cannot be photographed? I don't know if there are any laws regarding photography in the area, and don't want to be confronted by unhappy people, but also hope to capture the scenes of the area as they exist today.

Any suggestions on ISO and settings to make my photos pop? I use a Canon Rebel T1I, with a 15-85mm, f3.5-5.6, which seems to be a good all around lens for me. Thanks for any input.

I went there before and I saw some tourist shooting photographs. If you have doubts, you can shoot from afar and just crop your picture.

What happens in Amsterdam, stays in Amsterdam!!! Except the digital image!!

The Canon 15-85 is a fantastic lens for just about everything!!!

I would strongly suggest checking with the local law enforcement. When visiting foreign countries, laws we take for granted are not observed by some countries. Better to be safe that sorry.

Just use common sense. Shooting general street scenes is ok, but avoid photographing people up-close, as this is frowned upon in most of Europe and regarded as confrontation to individual privacy, well protected by law. Avoid taking photos if you see police nearby, as they may start asking questions, and who needs that. Beware of thieves - after dark, red light districts tend to attract criminals much more so than other areas in the city. Although I've never been to Amsterdam, I have spent time in the red light district of Hamburg some years ago. What I remember vividly are the many junkies, pimps and seedy-looking characters coming out after the sun went down. Not a place I'd want to have a big, expensive-looking camera visibly at my side at night.

Google is your friend - if you search for Amsterdam Red Light District you will get a ton of info and links to inform you on your upcoming visit.

From the Amsterdam Red Light District Questions and Answers - Amsterdam Red Light Distric Tours

Q: Can you take photos in the Red Light District

A: Yes, you can take photo’s in the Red Light District. The only thing that you can not take pictures of, are the prostitutes in Amsterdam.
The prostitutes don’t want to be photographed! They like to stay anonymous. Every prostitute has her own reason for this. For many years people have taken photographs of prostitutes without their permission, and this has led to a lot of irritation, fights and camera’s ending up in a canal.
It’s totally fine to make pictures from the beautiful buildings, bars, churches and canals in the Red Light District. Just respect the sex workers of Amsterdam and don’t take pictures of them.

I can't comment about Amsterdam, but a similar environment in Hamburg prohibits photography in certain areas, as well as non-working women on certain streets. Be discrete, and realize that if you are observed photographing people you may be putting yourself and or your equipment at risk. Neither workers nor clients generally like their activities to be recorded or publicized.

Totally agree. I was there a few years ago without camera, no regrets. There are many more nice areas in Amsterdam to visit and to photograph.

Whatever you do, if you take such photos do not post them here on the Hog! If you do, make absolutely sure you do not provide a link that some of us, innocently monitoring this topic, might accidentally click on!

Hell, when I was in Hamburg and going down Davidstrasse and Herbertstrasse at night I made sure I had a witness to keep me out of trouble. She was very helpful, although she got squirted with water bottles by the working ladies, and I'm not sure my wife would have believed her anyway!

I absolutely agree. You wouldn't be referring to anything like this would you? That would be a very bad idea!
