Australia is now undertaking the building of 12 new subs and other ships , we stand at 6 subs at the moment , we do not need 12 subs as Australia even today would be a very hard country to invade it is huge with most fighter planes needing to refuel just to get from one city to the next , not to forget most rural Australians are armed just like the USA with little water for thousands of km it would be a hard task for any one not to mention where our island sits in the world
no the reason we are building these new ships is at the insistence of our main ally the USA for us to do more to surport them in this part of the world only fair really

You stated that rural Australians are armed. Would like to hear more about that. We are under the impression here that all of Australia was "disarmed". So that is not true?

On May 1942, at the Battle of the Coral Sea, a Japanese invasion of Australia was repelled by US Naval Power. The Chinese Government wants to dominate the Pacific Theatre just as the Japanese during WW2. While America has downsized its Navy, I can understand the insistence of the American government wanting Australia to be seaworthy militarily. The China is building its Navy like never before. And would love to own Australia.

Yours is a marvelously perceptive summary and an understanding of the present-day reality.

The British aren't building any aircraft carriers. They are buying 2 from France. Don't get me started on the E.U. Apparently it's cheaper to let our steel industry flounder and ship builders go to the wall rather than retain this capability for ourselves.

I think the role of the Navy will change and not just for us.

Your post should be directed to the British Admiralty and politicians who have gutted the Royal Navy. And put a civil tongue in your head, mate, or they won't write back to you.

Unfortunately, this is true. Politicians have ruined the Royal navy. They probably Wont write back, because they know whereof I speak!!!!!!! B.T.W. I'm EX_RAF!!!!!!!!!!

The UK is building two Brand new Aircraft Carriers, one to be named the Queen Elizabeth. The US Navy now has about 10 active Aircraft Carriers, more than any nation. China has two Aircraft Carriers now, one old one bought from Russia they are restoring. The number of American warships now is the lowest since the pre-WW2 era. The Department of the Navy keeps saying we don't need a great number of warships anymore, but IMO we need to build more. The Navy Department says America has advanced technology to offset new expensive shipbuilding. America still has the greatest Navy, despite downsizing.

I agree with you, we must maintain a strong military and when necessary, have the resolve to use it.

That simply isn't true. We've several allies in Europe and beyond.

Golly, I never expected to be correcting a Brit on the Royal Navy. No, you are not buying aircraft carriers from France. Click the link below to discover two aircraft carriers are being built in Scotland.

The F-35C will be the aircraft of choice, which interesting as the F-35 has been getting some bad press over here. That may be more political than factual . . . . . but who knows?

That's not the case. There are several of our allies who don't routinely spy on us, then lobby for the convicted spy's release. No other of our allies has deliberately attacked a US Navy vessel in international waters, clearly flying the American flag, killing several sailors. No other head of state of a friendly nation has made speeches before Congress criticizing US policy and the administration. And our being allied with no other country costs us anywhere near as much in money. Your ignorance of those facts and others I'm sure, isn't surprising, given how you end your statement.

What a stupid, idiotic, ignorant and uninformed post. One of stupidest post I have seen. There are quite a few other countries that have done far, far, far worse to the United States and her people and are today considered very strong allies. Japan, Germany, Italy, and even the UK would be just some of the examples.

Did you forget about them, or are you just another stupid run of the mill Israel hater?

I stand corrected. There was certainly some talk of having to outsource it to the French. Thales, one of the builders, is a French multinational aerospace and defence contractor though.

The two carriers the Royal Navy is building will be the most advanced ships in the world including the US navy. The new destroyers are state of the art.Where they lack is in frigates and smaller shore defence vehicles. As for allies, of course the US has allies everywhere but arguably none so reliable as the UK. Think of recent battles, which country was by the side of the US.Germany? No chance. France? Weren't they called something like cheese eating yellow bellies. The UK has cut back as has many countries but its highly trained professional army, albeit smaller, would be worth fighting alongside.

In response to your statement, "TRIVIA: The British lost an entire Arctic expedition to scurvy, even though they took a good supply of limes. Kudos to whoever knows why this happened."

You'll find quite a bit of information in this article.

From whence comes the bizarre claim that "The British are the only ally the USA has..." Or that my citing to an article wound turn the Brits against the USA?

As to the facts, the numbers are in the article, and the gutting of the Royal Navy is no secret.
