I am in the market for my first entry level DSLR in the $800.00-$1000.00 range.
Back in the 80's I shot 35mm on a Yeshicha FX-D with an assortment of lenses, but it bit the dust years ago.
Right now I have a point and shoot Sony Cybershot H2 that I use for eBay stuff.

I am willing to accept the kit lens 18-140 to start out with for convenience, however I would like to expand the lens selection as my experence and abilities progress.
Cost and selection of Canon/Nikon and aftermarket lenses will come into play.
I want to shoot family photos, portraits, landscapes, macro, wildlife and some sports, but not much
I have never shot video on a camera, but that might be a deciding factor as well.
No grandkids yet, but I can see where video would be great for capturing family moments.

I would like an articulating touch screen.
Good selection of inexpensive Canon/Nikon and aftermarket lenses.
Easy menu system for beginners, but with the capability of going full manual as I progress.
Touch to focus looks like it would be great for beginners.
Diopter adjustment for my eyesight.
I am trying to decide between the Nikon D5500 and the Canon T6s.
After watching this video I chose 8 of 12 photos in favor of the Canon, but does that mean it is the right camera?

Most of you guys on the forum are professional caliber photographers, but I can't afford that high dollar equipment.
I want a good camera foundation that can be expanded on as I learn more about the techniques that it takes to get professional results.
Having said that, there may be other/better options that I have overlooked?

Also, I have a beautiful wife that I would like get some creative shots of.
You know the type.
This is not meant to offend anyone, so if it is not appropriate please take them down

The Canon is the right choice as you want shots of your wife and yes I think it does offend some people.

How possibly can anyone be offended by such beautiful pictures of the human form?

I agree but, someone will be, even though they are tastefully and artfully done.

Welcome to the land of prickly hogs!

I won't comment on Nikon, I'm sure many will, and other brands also.

For your price range the Canon T6s seems a good choice with the 18-135mm STM lens. It should be good for video also. The new 80D also looks very good, but is a little over your suggested budget, so a T6s plus another lens (such as a 50mm) could be a better fit cost wise, especially if you want a battery grip.

Also, there is a new section on the forum (you need to subscribe to it) that may interest you. It is very new. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-27-1.html Nice images, perhaps you should post them in the new section as well, and if somebody does object then you can just point them to the appropriate section.

Good luck.

Freemont, LoL, yea, this can of worms is gonna be pretty hard to put the lid back onto!!
Four things
First, a little history....., MOST, old codgers shoot Nikon, so you'll get a lot of that here!
Second, a little future, more young people shot Canon than Nikon, but not many young'ns here.
3rd, more Pros shoot Canon than any other brand. Didn't used to be that way, but it is now. hmmmmm?!
4th, you may not ALWAYS be entry level!!!
Decisions, decisions?
SS
PS, as far as shooting your wife, join the brand new Boudoir section, nobody will be offended there and you can ask questions to your hearts content. Here, some will actually faint!!!!

What is interesting is that some of those people that protest about such tasteful images as being offensive are also some of the people that express their political or religious views loudly and proudly without apparently realizing that such things can also be offensive to others. Some of them do realize and simply do not care about offending other people. We have the full spectrum on UHH.

Presently Nikon has the best DR and Canon has the best touch screens...but the photo is still taken by the photographer and that's what MAKES the photo. Still love my Canon stuff....

The lighting and the pose in the first image is stunningly beautiful....

Did you hear those thuds and feel the floor vibrate just now? Was that the fainting of which you speak or just an earthquake in Texas or Kentucky?

LoL, Peter, you being much smarter than myself(or anyone else), I have been trying to remember the name of the lady on the milk commercial(20 years ago), everytime they said"milk does a body good", or "everybody needs milk, she would faint at the sound of the word "body"!! What was her name?!?!
It's what's going on here......!

My opinion, either the Canon or Nikon would be a great choice. Yes, there are some differences, but those are in the details. Some of your requirements, I think can only be met with a Canon, others can only be met with a Nikon.

Now, I shoot Nikon but I am not about ready to get into a debate on which is better. The bottom line is both are GREAT, but some are greater than others.

If you can, go to a camera store and handle both cameras, try the menus, perhaps even rent the two cameras you are considering. Also, look at the equipment that each brand has in their line up. Don't be swayed by comments like "Pros us more Canons than Nikons." Who cares, you are not in the market for a "Professional Camera" whatever that is.

The question you asked can only be answered by you. I am very happy with my camera, only about four years old, and has been replaced by 3 new models. I will consider updating only when my camera can't do what I want it to. (By the way, it's a Nikon D5100, but it could have been a Canon as well, or even some other brand, it doesn't matter).

Do your research, make your decision, and don't look back, certainly don't play the "What If game."

Best of luck in choosing the right camera, whatever it is, I know you will enjoy it.

Don't know about that one SS, perhaps others will remember, unless they fainted of course!

It sounds like some of the threads on UHH: "Got MILC?...."

Thud!......

SS? Are you there? Can you hear me SS?....

I was wondering about that, but some things just get lost in translation in this kind of format.

Thanks for the quick responses.
Like several have mentioned, one camera is probably not better than the other, but for my needs I wanted some specifics.
I no mater how much research I do, I know I will over look some thing.
As far as expanding in the future are prices of lenses about the same for either brand? Are there specific older-used lenses that will work better on the Canon vs the Nikon?

For your price range the Canon T6s seems a good choice with the 18-135mm STM lens. It should be good for video also.
