The Nikon WMU wifi app works pretty well but only syncs with a mobile device such as a phone or Ipad. It will not sync with a laptop. I find it useful for sharing photos when travelling without a laptop. It is a quirky app that has a mind of it's own. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't...

My D3300 came with a CDROM for a program called ViewNX2, from Nikon. I believe you can download it over the web from Nikon for free, and Pg. 85 of the D3300 user's manual tells you how to download your photos. If you don't have your users manual, Nikon Manual Viewer 2 app is also available online for free from the App Store or Google Play. You should have gotten a USB cable with camera to connect w/computer. I agree WU-1a waste of money, cable connection transfers more than 100 photos in seconds. ViewNX2 loaded in Windows 10 w/o any problem.

Some Nikon DSLR do not have built in Wi-Fi. Two of them are the D3300 and D7100. You need an adapter WU-1a to get Wi-Fi. A friend with a D3300 says it is a waste of money. Perhaps he hasn't mastered it yet?

Your friend was right. Have the 1a and have used it with the P530 and the D3300. It is clunky, slow and sensitive to location of camera to download device. Also, the Wi-Fi function will not work unless an exact sequence is followed when making connection between camera and other device. IMHO not worth the $50.

Nikon added Bluetooth to the D5 and D500 and the app for its use with a Smart device is Snapbridge, which can be downloaded free.

I have the Nikon D7200 with built-in wi-fi and using wi-fi to get the photos from the camera to iPhone 6 (using the WMU app I downloaded from the Nikon website) is a piece of cake and very convenient. And I absolutely LOVE being able to use wi-fi for remote shutter control. That's REALLY handy on those cold clear winter mights when you have a beautifully clear sky and you want to get some long exposure (bulb) shots of the night sky but it's 36(F) degrees out there so you're freezing your butt off. Instead, you go out and setup the camera .... turn in wi-fi on the camera .... then go back inside where it's warm ... and control the shutter from the warmth of your house.

Anyway, I got sidetracked .... I have also looked for a program for my Apple Mac computer that could get photos from my camera via wi-fi and I found a third-party program but it doesn't work as advertised. It doesn't recognize the camera. So for a iPhone or iPad .. Yes, WMU is an absolute godsend and I use it quite often. But for doing the same with my desktop computer .... I haven't found anything yet that works.

I like the wifi capability of my D750. When you're out in the field you can pull images to a phone or tablet, connecting to the camera's wifi the way you would any wifi network, and send immediately. I can send NEF or JPEG files. Generally I send the JPEGs because of the recipient. The app is Nikon WMU. It's a bit "clunky" and I hope for an improved version in the near future. But I've found this useful on a number of occasions.

I use a Nikon D5300 which has WIFI. I downloaded Nikon WMU to my samsung galaxy and have no problem pairing the two. On my camera in the playback menu I select which photos to send to smart device then on my phone I select download. So far no problem. The photos end up in my galary on my phone with my other photos. Now the rub, I open a messaging app to send the photos to someone else, or social media, and the phone says "unsupported media type select different media. I found that if i go to the photos in gallery and edit the photos ever so slightly they then will attach to my outgoing message. What am I doing wrong or not doing.
