i am confused by the way nikon comes out with there cameras.

i have a d-3000 and a d5100 are these in the same class or rank as the new d3200 , and where is the d 7000 come into play in there classificatios, along with d-3's and so on.

I am sure i will get some eye rolls from someone on here but i would like to know how they classify there cameras which are the best and which are the worst.

Easy - the "best" are the ones that say "Nikon" on the front, whereas the worst are named after a towel or a rag or something. :XD: <JK>

I don't know how hey come up with model numbers either other than the pro "flagship" models are the single numbers (currently F6, D3X and D4).

They even followed the Canon method and had different model numbers for the US or North America than the rest of the world (The N series in US are labeled F everywhere else.)

This has been a pet peeve of mine for a while now. (You can see that I lead a pretty dull life.) There are very smart people working at camera companies, yet their model names are ridiculous. They make no sense, and some are way too long - I'm speaking of Canon here. "EOS Rebel T3i." Why so many letters? Or how about the "Powershot Elph 1200SD IS."

I don't like the names "Coolpix" and "Rebel." They're both good camera lines, but the names make them sound entry-level. What does EOS mean? And why have an "EOS Rebel"?

D3000 --> D3100 --> D3200
D5000 --> D5100 --> D5200 (someday)
D7000 --> D7100 (someday) --> D7200 (someday)

I have a D3000 and a D7000 - I cringed when I read "which are the worst?" I guess I would have to say I have the "worst" with the D3000 but it produces great images, it's just not as sophisticated as the D7000, it's the only one of the lot above that doesn't have a movie function.

I rather like the present numbering system. It should give them about 20 years or so of numbers if they continue counting by 100.

The other day, MT gave the definitive answer to this question. Single digit Nikon bodies are for professional applications and have specific capabilities such as very fast shutter speeds, fast repetitive shooting for sports events or ruggedized bodies that can take a licking and keep on clicking. Most photographers have no need for them unless you need that sort of reliability.

Let the price be your guide. It's not foolproof, but it does give an indication.

there is so many numbers out there where do they line are the 100 digits numbers better than four digit. It is kinda crazy the way they do it but i am sure it is because i am not understanding their methods.

THAT...is very funny! Took me a second because I was thinking in different terms.

Why don't we all write to Nikon and say we want more understandable naming conventions for their cameras and lenses.
We seem to have a similar thread going about Nikon lenses today.

D100 -> D200 -> D300 -> D300S . . . Prosumer/High Level DX

The D700 is the entry-level Full Frame. It is being debated as to whether the D800/E is the replacement or the beginning of a new line.
