I believe it was Ken Rockwell that stated it's the same sensor as in the D4...but I'llhave to verify

It isn't clear what "it" you are referring to: D3100, 3200, 5100, or 7000...although the latter two are the same 16 MP Expeed 2.

The Nikon D4 is a full frame where all the others are cropped sensors so whichever you meant I think the answer is, "not". It may perform about the same but all the cropped sensors are 50% smaller.

I had also heard that the D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000, and I think I heard it on this forum. I went back and read Ken's review of the D5100, doing a search for D7000. Although he says that both cameras have superb quality images and construction, I didn't see that he said they have the same sensors.

The D5100 has always gotten great reviews for its images, so whatever sensor it has, it's working.

I was referring to the D3200....the following statement is directly from Nikon :
"Image-processing engine EXPEED 3 – the same as that used by the Nikon D4 FX-format flagship camera – achieves high speed, multiple functions and high performance"

I don't mean to agrue, I'd lose anyway..lol, but that is what I was refering to. But, you are correct in that the image would be cropped. Agree?

Yes, agree. Interesting quote. Guess they are speaking to the "Expeed 3" part of it, not the actual size. I am not sure what that refers to...perhaps some technical nicety. The D5100/7000 are Expeed 2.
