I now use Photoshop Elements latest issue $99 last version (just as good) $69. Ihope when you get into post process you will like lt as much as I do.

The rental is cheaper than upgrading used to be for both LR & PS.

And once in a while you can find Photoshop Elements 14 on sale for even less, but to that price I'd suggest you add the cost of a good Elements Manual. Barbara wrote an excellent one for PSE 10, but I don't know if she has an updated version out (yet?).

I WOULD NOT recommend Scott Kelby's "Photoshop Elements 14 book"; it's good for what it explains, but assumes you have a fair amount of prior experience with earlier versions of Elements which is necessary because neither Photoshop or Photoshop Elements are intuitive.

First, no you don't need both.

Renting, subscription, or leasing, whatever you call it is not for me.

LR (Lightroom) is a fine program by itself. You also said that you're a digital beginner. That being said, if you have PS (Photoshop) I think you be slowly wastin your money and here is my common sense reason.

You have LR for 10 bucks a month, (120 a year). No real problems here. If you get PS also that's 10 more a month, (120 a year). Thats 240 a year.

Assuming LR is used just about always and only a couple things are needed in PS, why not buy something like PSP (Paintshop Pro) since it only costs about 80 bucks?

For the next two or three years, I doubt you need the latest and greatest. So you can figure $120 a year or $80 for two to three years. That is PS = $240 to $360. PSP = $80. (Spend alot or a little.)

...and you will probably take a year to really learn either PS or PSP before needing an thing really fancy. They're both pretty similar in actions too.

You'll likely spend more on lessons for PS to where PSP is basically free on line from the company or some experts.

Sure PS us updated but do you really need that? Also you can find some lesser cosy programs that do similar for free if you look around.

Any major change or update can equally be justified too.

You get LR and PS for $9.99 plus tax per month for both of them not each!

I feel that a less expensive option to get instead of Photoshop would be onOne Photo suite 10, as the cost is only $149 and it has much of what you would get in Photoshop and it does it better in some cases. It can be used as a stand alone app. and it also integrates with Lightroom for access to the various modules
used to further enhance your images. There are many free videos that will show you how to use the software and aquaint you with its many features and it can be used on a free trial basis.

Correct, and if you watch the pre-holiday sales at places like B&H, you can get it for even less.

It's not really a "rental", but more of a subscription that you can start or stop any time you like. But you can't get LR as a monthly subscription by itself (that I know of), but you do get both, LR and Photoshop CC. This is the best of both worlds. But if you don't like subscriptions, you might consider buying Photoshop Elements. That is a package that is great to start with if you are a beginner at post processing. It allows you to keep your photos organized, edit raw images, and do pixel editing. It's not as powerful as Photoshop/LR CC, but you don't "rent" it, you buy it, and it costs less that $70.

While you don't "HAVE" to have Photoshop in order to use Lightroom, for the $10 per month of the Cloud, it is almost dumb not to do it. If you look, there is another thread where it was state that if you paid $10 per month it would take several years to pay for the cost of Lightroom and Photoshop together if you purchased them outright, and the Cloud keeps both up to date with the current release all of the time. And, with the Cloud, you can have Lightroom/Photoshop active on any two computers at any time. I have it installed on two desktops and one laptop. When traveling I just make sure that the desktop version is logged out.

What nobody has shared with you is when you get Scott Kelby's book Photoshop isn't that hard--compared to Photoshop Lightroom is a real Lightweight--and I know others love it--I have it, and have never opened it--there is nothing Photoshop can't do

Both? I was told by several it was each.

I stand corrected in the total pricing. It's less if a savings but still is to a degree.

Note: there is no tax on Adobe in most states. It is an internet (mail)order. I live in Florida, and when I lived in Pennsylvania (one of the highest taxed locations in America) there was no tax on Adobe. $9.99 total deducted from my bank account.

For 99% of your photo retouching needs, Lightroom will be fine. If you want to do more creative editing, use layers, luminosity masks, etc then you will need Photoshop. Everything else is just a pale comparison.

Okay... as I said, most states.. I figured that if Pennsylvania could find a way to tax anything, they would. Florida has no sales on internet or income tax in anyway but they due have sales tax on items purchased locally in stores 7% in Clearwater, so it is very nice.
