I've been following a discussion between a couple of owners that bought it for video shooting. They like it a lot. I'm pretty sure I want one! I can give you a link if video is of interest.

One of the fun parts of 4K video capability is to shoot for stills. Essentially, 4K video is 30 pictures a second and they are can be 8 megapixel JPEGs. If you are a Lightroom user, the tools to pick them out of the video files are built in and very easy. No, it does not replace larger file stills. But, it can be an interesting part of what you do.

I have the II version and have used it a lot over the past year. I have nothing against it but the plastic gears inside. I swear I can now hear them more than I did when it was new. Nothing, I repeat, nothing about this camera I don't like. It is great, I guess I am just worried about all those plastic gears going out at some critical time. But, like I said, nothing so far and the camera is giving great results. And the new one is able to get 400mm more than I currently get. And those T* lenses, wow, are they sharp. I once owned Hasselblad and they had T* lenses. Now you can get all of that technology for $1400.00, plus 4k video. I might just have to get it. I own a ton of DSLR equipment, but when I am taking a vacation trip, I only take my Sony RX10 II and my Sony Cyber shot DCS-RX100M2, that's all I ever need on vacation, well, I might need to replace my RX10 II for that extra reach. Live long and shoot hard.

This camera will be a game changer for many IMO. The biggest thing that bothers me about it ( I do NOT have one) is the ability to point it with accuracy at 600mm EQ. - and the lack of a tripod collar to use a normal support system to aid in the pointing accuracy - rather than using the body mount when the lens is extended.

No problem, this combo is so light that it can easily be mounted on a tripod using the thread in the base of the camera. Even with the lens extended a tripod would have no problem holding the camera steady, even with the lens extended.

I have been thinking about this camera and the Leica V-Lux. Same reach, Leica much lighter. Has anyone tried both? Thanks.

Don't think Tamron 150-600 or even a Sigma 150-600 or even a Nikon 200-500, it's more like a 28-300 type of weight, even lighter. So, even though the Sony RX10 III is extended to 600mm, it is a very light 600mm.

From what I read the Leica V-Lux has goes from 24 to 400 but the Sony RX10 III is 24-600.

The Leica V-Lux 4 (2012) is a 12mp camera with a 1/2.33" (6.08 x 4.56 mm) sensor with a 24-600. The sony (2016) has a 1" sensor, about 4x bigger.
