Thanks Lukan...made me blush...but definitely not a pro here...just a self-taught dedicated enthusiast.

Oops! Yeah, group his work in there, too.

In fact, throw in a few more thousand names of pros and amateurs alike. The paradigm is shifting, and the shift is accelerating. We will always have some dSLRs for the foreseeable two decades, but it is likely that mirrorless cameras with EVFs take the majority of sales within ten years.

It'll probably take less than 10 years. There's a rumor and 1 has been seen of a new Sony with 72 mp that will be out this fall. That outa knock the socks off of the N&C empire.

Most working pros know that 16 to 24 MP is plenty for 95% of their work. The MP wars are ridiculous.

Bill, I was just mentioning the new Sony, I don't know what I would even do with 72 mp other than make billboard size prints and that's not going to happen for me anyways. I'm quite happy with my Sony's at 24mp. Although my a7Rii has 42mp.

Sony and Panasonic are the biggest marketers of mirrorless cameras today. Sony has A-mounts and E-mount lenses. Many Sony mirrorless camera owners want the best of both worlds using adapters that sometimes don't measure up to the quality desired.

At some point it becomes an issue of diminishing returns. Its nice to have 100mp for a billboard. But how many of all the pros shoot to produce a image for a billboard? Not even all the pros that shoot advertising will be producing something that the client would be willing to spend the money for a billboard. As Bill mentioned before, 16mp to 24mp covers at least 95% of the shots for the pros and probably close to 100% for all the rest of us.

I hear the billboard trend is heading toward using LEDs that convert a digital picture's input into the billboard-sized image. This way, all the billboard owner has to do is feed another digital image (or images) into the computer that feeds the billboard. MP count won't really matter anymore since the billboard's "program" will fill in the image with its LEDs.

I think billboard images could be 6MP and look fine from their normal viewing distances. It's normally a myth that huge prints need super-sized images out of the camera. Where high MP images DO count is subject matter like a big group photo of 600 people that you KNOW is going to be pixel-peeped. The more, the merrier, for that.

Yep. There are several along I-85 in Charlotte, NC. They change the image every 20-30 seconds, rotating the contents in a loop.

Some of the most knowledgeable pros on the planet use mirrorless gear. Names like:

Will Crockett
Giulio Scorio
Marlene Heilema
Paul Gero
Chuck Jones
Daniel J. Cox
Tony Northrup
Zach Arias
David Thorpe

...and lots of others. I personally switched from Canon and Nikon to Panasonic. I have pro friends who use Fujifilm and Sony and Olympus.

Frankly, there is nothing wrong with ANY of these brands. All are good for some applications. All have access to GREAT lenses. Pick the combination of features that best suits your needs and move along...

You are probably right. And Bill is probably right (about 6mp filling the billboard). This begs the question, why aren't they saving money by buying mirrorless and saving on equipment cost? bsmith52 question for going mirrorless has even more "fuel for the fire"; save money by buying mirrorless without a real loss of ability to shoot just about anything for just about any conceivable use.

Child protective services? Betcha most of them use their cell phones.

Oh you probably mean canon professional services...If that's the case, and let's say there are 10,000 or so members...I bet a small portion of them also own a mirrorless system (to supplement), with it most likely being a Sony, Fuji, or m4/3. The reason it's not a canon...well you know...it's because canon has decided to not seriously invest in that market...and to stick with what they know, the old DSLR format.

In the end, it's a personal decision to shoot what you want to shoot, and I could really care less what the person next to me is shooting.

I was once a member of CPS and separately, NPS. They were much more important --- and useful --- in the decades prior to this one.

I was a CPS member once (when I shot the 1DX). It's a great feature for the traveling pro who needs to borrow a lens at a major sporting event, or have a repair or adjustment made on the fly. Several of the guys I saw in that tent had mirror less systems with adapters for their Canon glass. Some just went with the Zeiss (Sony) or Leica (Panasonic) or Olympus, depending on the body they were shooting. When it came to sports or wildlife in action, they shot Canon, but this was three years (and more) ago. Times, they are a-changin', and the 40lb kit for full-frame isn't getting any lighter, but mirror less systems are getting better and better, from lenses to bodies.
