Johnny, don't feel bad. The menu system in GIMP alone is daunting. I'll never understand why the programmers who wrote that program chose to depart from the standard menu system used by almost everyone.

It's a powerful program, but daunting to learn to use well.

Whoa, slow down... none of that is really the case. What you are is simply inexperienced and what GIMP is is extremely complicated (as will any equally capable image editor be). Have patience, and work at it.

Different people also learn in different ways. Some can get more from watching videos, others get more from reading tutorials, and a few even learn best from reading the user manual.

I've been using GIMP since something like version 1.2 and of course by now it feels very comfortable. But I remember when the entire concept of layers was mind boggling. And I can remember the difficulty I had the first time I put a couple people from one picture into another picture. Today those are mundane tasks... but only because I've done them many many time.

Here's a bit of advice on gaining experience (that is a bit tough to swallow too). Don't figure out something you want to do and look for instructions to do it. Instead find a tutorial about doing something that would be useful and try doing that. And then another, and another. You'll learn the basics, and then you can make an effort at finding a tutorial for some specific task.

As for right now and right here... What is the most confusing single thing you are bumping up against? Describe it and people here will explain it. A question like "Exactly what is the value of the Colors->Threshold menu option? How and when do I use it?"

The strength of GIMP is that it allows the user a great deal of customization. For example, I customized my copy such that the layout looks and acts very similar to Photoshop, with a few minor changes to fit my specific needs. The program can be configured to look like some other editor you are already familiar with, or in any manner that best fits with your editing needs and workflow. If you don't customize GIMP's layout and menu, you are not really taking advantage of what it can do for you. I think many people simply open up GIMP for the first time, are confused by the unfamiliar default layout, and then quickly give up. Initially, I made this mistake too. Then I came across some tutorials on youtube on how to customize GIMP, and I've been happily using GIMP from that point on.

I like GIMP, but I remember how I was frustrated when I started. The key is to move slowly and start with simple things like change the contrast of the image, do some cropping. The idea is to get comfortable with tools. I like watching videos, a lot of them on youtube-very helpful.
We have GIMP expert here on UHH, Shakey. He was nice and came up with tutorial for those who wants to learn GIMP.
Be patient, it's a very powerful program and FREE!
Relax and have fun learning!

How easy is it to manage photos with GIMP? When I recently tried it as a replacement to PaintShop it appeared to lack an easy way of getting thumbnails up to preview what you were going to process.

I have Gimp on my computer and use it occasionally for specific edits that it does well without a great deal of experimentation. I find that the "clone" tool is one of the easiest tools to use of that type and produces great results. Most of my editing is done with Photoshop Elements and I use Picasa mainly for straightening or cropping photos. For ease of use, Picasa ranks high on my list, but will no longer be supported by Google with updates. Version 3.2 is still available for downloading, however.

Are you sure that's what you want to tell us?

Genetic admixture occurs when two or more previously isolated populations begin interbreeding.[1] Admixture results in the introduction of new genetic lineages into a population. It has been known to slow local adaptation by introducing foreign, unadapted genotypes (known as gene swamping).

I never was comfortble with gimp either and my job was to set up and troubleshoot and maintain UNIX servers. I gave up on it and used Picassa. When I outgrew Picassa I got Photoshop CS6, which I still use on almost every pic I take, but I avoid using layers (which I forced myself to learn and promptly forgot). Another free program I could never get into was the free video editing program Davinci Resolve. I couldn't figure it out either in spite of (or maybe because of) it's 1,000+ page manual. Premiere Pro has a learning curve too, but is easy to use and learn. A program should be easy to use and learn regardless of it's capabilities. If it's a brain twister, it's too much like work to be enjoyable.

Once I learned to use a Limited Edition of PhotoShop, learning gimp was straight- forward. Yes, the menus are different, but at the time I thought that was merely to avoid the usual look-and-feel lawsuit.
