I think we will need to plan on coming back because all you UHH'ers have posted so many fantastic sounding locations. I truly hope we can get to most of them! Thanks to everyone who posted!

Hmmmm..., 90?!?!
I was 18 years old during the summer of love!
Let's see here..., that was 47 years ago +18 years = 65 years old!!!
Kuzano, you must be talking about YOUR era. So tell us, what was it like before the Beatniks?!?!
SS

Who knows... nobody was taking any video or pictures. Film for the masses was 8mm, and the camera's were Kodak Brownies.

I may have been a little off on the ages. They just look 90 because of all the sun baked skin unprotected from the sun. There's a Book Store Piano player in Quartzite Arizona, who I am thinking of when I mention Old Naked Hippies. He looks near 90... baked in the sun.

Here is a video on youtube of him playing the piano in his book store. Tourism abounds in Quartzite and his store.

NSFW or Kids:

And a bit of his philosophy/background, again NSFW/kids:

That's what I see in my mind as I think of the Big Sur region and south on the sometimes missing Highway 1... Watch your speed around those curves, as you could drive off the cliff along the ocean.

Oh yes, the gentleman's name is Paul Winer, but I think it's pronounce weiner. This is a photo op that should not be bypassed but too far from Monterey for the OP to catch on his trip.

Don, we were on a cruise this winter with a group from Monterey. Many of them volunteer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It has recently been rebuilt to be one of the best in the world. If you go and meet some of them, they will surely give you tips on specific spots you might visit along the coast to see wildlife such as Oystercatchers and newly returned wild Sea Otters. From their description, the Monterey area is a wonderful place to see nature.

LOL --North to the Cambria area and Hearst Castle (somewhat long drive) 150 miles - 3 hours.

It IS SOUTH to Hearst Castle & Cambria - you must be confusing it with Moro Bay.

The whole Montery- Pacific Grove - Carmel has so much to offer for the photographer

You could be right. My point of reference is where my M-in-law lived in Ventura...Ventura Harbor.

I guess Monterey is North of that.... but let's remember here. My memories are of the 60's.. Somewhat foggy, much like San Francisco.

Hearst Castle - Cambria South from Monterey through Big Sur, but you still need continuous highway to make the distance. So the other alternative is to go inland, then down to Ventura and back up to Cambria or Hearst.

Now...you happy?

Obvious answers
->Spend a day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. That should fill up an afternoon at least.
->Many commercial fishing boats.
->Also consider booking a whale-watching sailing with Chris' Whale Watching--you may not see whales but you can get some great shot os dolphins and other sealife.
->Cannery Row, but it has been "touristed" up.

You'll get a lot of advertising for 17-mile drive, but I think it is boring and not worth the toll or time.

Oh for sure - Hwy 1 from Santa Cruz to Moro Bay/Rock is one of our favorite drives - usually 3 days at least so much to see and photo. One full day in and around Hearst Castle for sure.

   I have gone out whale watching many times from Monterey. There are several companies that do this. One used a converted fishing boat that didn't have much railing space -- I didn't like that one as much.

I have seen whales every time I have gone out from Monterey. And usually a lot of them. This time of year, you should be seeing humpbacks. I have seen as many as 40 on one trip. Later in the summer, occasionally the Blue Whales come in. I have seen them in Monterey once. (I have seen many Blue Whales farther to the south by the Channel Islands near Santa Barbara. And Fin Whales too.) But if the feeding conditions are good, they will come to Monterey.

Be prepared for it being cold. It can be hot on shore, but a few miles out, it can be an entirely different story. Take along a plastic bag to keep the camera dry while underway. When the boat stops, you can take it out.

I live in the area, for wildlife Elkhorn Slough is great, the sea otters are usually there in force as well as sea lions, pelicans and other sea birds, renting a kayak will get you very close. Rent a kayak in Moss landing, on Highway one north of Castroville. The harbor there is home of Embari.
The research company of the Monterey bay Aquarium. In Castroville there is a small restaurant called the Trolley Diner, excellent food. All of Monterey has great places for pictures. South of Monterey past point Lobos is a park called Garrapata, a short hike down to the cliffs allows for some great wave shots and very beautiful shoreline exploration.

I visit Monterey and/or Santa Cruz at least once a year. Thanks for the tip. I'll take a look at the slough soon. Sounds great.
