All the above are great suggestions. I would like to add Point Lobos State Reserve.

Welcome to California! Enjoy!

I can't add anything to what the others have already offered... I like your 'Heritage Flight' avatar!

I am a local - be sure to get to Pt Lobos when the gate opens -- this time of year it is packed with divers and tourists -- when they reach parking capacity, no one is let in till someone leaves. You can park along Hwy One and hike in -- not a long hike. Also take Hwy 68 out toward US 101 - wild flowers are usually in abundance; Laguna Seca is also out there as well as Toro Park -- more flowers. Farther north of Monterey is Santa Cruz with an old fashion boardwalk and a Loof carossel...and wooden framed roller coster....In Scotts Valley n of Santa Cruz is a Roaring Camp Rail Road - steam engines....enjoy.

All the above are excellent suggestions. In this area, more than any other that I can think of, your shoe leather and perhaps your camera shutter will wear out before you run out of subjects! Enjoy your trip!

Don't miss Pacific Grove just west of Monterey on a pretty 7 minute shore drive; and definitely the aquarium!

While in Napa Valley take the Napa Valley train. Plan on having one of their gourmet meals. Plan ahead and make your reservations now - don't wait for the train fills up fast. You'll never regret it. Have fun and enjoy. Hope to see some of your pictures in the future.

Lived there a decade. Now I'm up the coast -- an improvement in weather and very few people out-of-doors, I find, which is a boon to nature photography.

About the Monterey Peninsula:

The only fully authentic historical relics in the area IMO are the garrison buildings on the lower Presidio inside which you can still smell the WW I horse manure when it rains; but the base is now secured.

The historical artifacts from the 18th and 19th century have been rendered too cheesy to shoot, if you know what they ought to be, though they are plenty interesting to see.

Monterey has been wholly sanitized, courtesy of a mayor who paved over the disreputable organic scene at the Monterey waterfront, long, long ago; nothing left of Steinbeck's era. Nada. They say she objected to the cat houses, lowlifes, and bars.

1. For Landscapes: The most beautiful 'scapes of all are 5-10 miles south of Carmel Valley Road on Highway 1, beyond revered Point Lobos.

2. For closeups: Go to Rio Road at the mouth of Carmel Valley; walk down to the river bed, parking inside 3850; nobody thinks of shooting that. Avoid poison oak by accessing the river at the tennis courts. Be gone by 5:00 PM -- lowlifes, again.

3. For studying composition: Check out the California impressionist art at La Mirada.

4. Underwater: Kelp forests.

5. Low tide: Creatures and plants in the rocks. Avoid the water on 17-mile drive; raw sewage, esp. near the seals.

I ran a print shop in Monterrey for 5 years color ad press. Just go out and take a drive everything is close enough for a morning, afternoon or a day trip, shoot what catches your eye there is so much to shoot, but if you get a chance to take a day drive, go down the coast to the Big Sur area it will take your breath away. Hit up the Moss landing area also to bad it is not august I"meet up with you and show you some spots as I'll be there for a month with friends that live there, we are going to buy a second home near the coast that we can live in during cold months here in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Make sure you go to Nepenthe restaurant south of Carmel on route 1. Great views and good food.

...and a really long wait if you get there on a weekend near lunchtime.
Tough to get good photographs from there as there are too many trees in the way.

I was just there last week. Point Lobos is about 10 miles south of Monterey. It's just past Carmel. Lots of hiking trails, small beaches and rocky coast.

Anywhere along coast in Pacific Grove. Check the tide tables and go during low tide. Thsi time of year it's about 10 am and 4 pm +/- and hour. Lots of cool stuff to see in the tidepools. Don't miss the jetty by the Coast Guard station in Monterey. Thousands of sea lions and harbor seals call it home.

Further south is Big Sur. The coastline is a must see. You'll cross a small bridge, can't remember the name, but it's in all the car commercials and many others. Quite scenic. I've only scratched the surface. I'm sure others will chime in with more.
I was just there last week. Point Lobos is about 1... (show quote)

It's the Bixby Bridge, spectacular from both sides.
