I'm lucky to be able to get real gasoline. It lasts a long time, engines run better with it, and I'm not taking carburetors apart anymore. I, too, use 89 octane. I love Sea Foam stabilizer and their carb cleaner, although I rarely have had to use the cleaner recently.

Where do you gat the good stuff? I can't find it anywhere around here. Out, damned ethanol!

Yes, that is a possibility. It takes two to tangle, er, tango. ;-)

I actually have two oil companies nearby that still sell the good stuff. One is southeast of me and the other northeast of me. 30 mile scenic drives and both have other places of interest nearby.

Just wait until 15 percent ethanol is the order of the day. Another example of my government being here to help me.....

Can paper coffee filters such as the type used in Mr. Coffee machines be used to filter gasoline?

Will the gasoline break-down the make-up of the filter and lead to more impurities?

Thanks,

Not sure if coffee filters will work, or not. I bought a new fuel filter for my car, and use it to pre-filter gas for my dirt bike. When I need to change my cars filter, I'll use that one, and buy another one to do the same.

Best idea yet. Better safe than sorry.

Most marinas gas is ethanol free, but they charge a lot more than the local station

Yes, I think one could use coffee filters to filter gas.

You talking about gas for a lawnmower, etc., right? You're not going to pull out a coffee filter when you fill the tank in your car. I would give it a try by pouring some gas into a glass jar and see how it looks. Using the paper filter could make the situation worse. There are funnels with fine mesh screens designed to do what you want.

Thanks everyone. I did successfully use one, pre-wetted as Bob had suggested, and shall clean or replace the soiled ones. And I'll a more secure storage container for them that will keep them clean, that bag I was using is probably 35 years old.

Paper filters are used in chemistry labs to filter both aqueous solutions (in water) and those in organic solvents. Herbalists who make tinctures with grain alcohol use coffee filters to filter their tinctures. They should do just fine for gasoline.

The pure gasoline seems to work better, and I know the plastic tubes in some of my older lawn equipment got stiff and fell apart when I had to use gasoline with ethanol in it. In my car I get 3 or 4 more miles per gallon with pure gasoline than with the ethanol mix. It costs about 40% more, though, so is not worth it. I wonder if the reduced pollution of the ethanol really makes up for the reduced efficiency...

If it were me, I'd forgo the gas and just get rid of it. I wouldn't want any chance of grit getting into my engines. That being said, are you talking a lot of gallons or just say something less than 5 gallons total? Knowing that might change my mind. Cheers and good luck.
