Can paper coffee filters such as the type used in Mr. Coffee machines be used to filter gasoline?

Will the gasoline break-down the make-up of the filter and lead to more impurities?

Thanks,

I would think so. They used to use toilet paper for auto oil filters.

I'm lucky to be able to get real gasoline. It lasts a long time, engines run better with it, and I'm not taking carburetors apart anymore. I, too, use 89 octane. I love Sea Foam stabilizer and their carb cleaner, although I rarely have had to use the cleaner recently.

Is Sea Foam stabilizer like a fuel itself? I use STABIL in my gas. It's supposedly good for a year but my son told me about this stuff you can put in a tank, even with STABIL, (like a generator) and it will stay for about 2 years.
I almost screwed up my generator by not running it until empty.

I've tried it. answer to Q. #1 - Yes. Q. #2- No.

Use a funnel with a fine screen, Put the paper coffee filter on top of that. It works.

I switched from Stabil after it evaporated in a tank and left a bunch of red flakes. Plus, if I remember, Stabil itself has a one year shelf-life.

Sea Foam not only stabilizes gasoline and ethanol, it's also a cleaner. Sea Foam also makes an aerosol carburetor cleaner that really works.

I would guess the coffee filters would work as others have stated. Try it first and see what happens from one container to another as has been suggested. I guess I have never been that worried about gas in ground based equipment. I do use 100 octane (AV gas) in my 71 Mustang as it likes it much better.

One of the suppliers I use, Chardon Oil, has racing gas available, from 93 to 117 octane rating. They also offer:
Leaded Fuels:
Sunoco E-85R (Official Nascar Racing Fuel!)
Sunoco Maximal (Cam II Red)
Sunoco Standard (Cam II Purple)
Sunoco Supreme (Cam II Blue)
VP C-12
VP C-14
VP C-16
VP U4.4
Unleaded Fuels:
Sunoco 260 G.T.
Sunoco G.T. Plus
VP MS 109

The high-test pump has warnings on it.

And I just want my lawnmower to start and run smoothly...

I just asked my son who is visiting about something he uses called TRUE FUEL(sp?) he said that Sea Foam is more like STABIL.
I have to find some of this TRU FUEL.

Wish I could find some of the fuels you mentioned above. I read some article that said that ethanol-free gasoline is better for your car and is great for fuel economy. There was something about the corn growing lobby getting us to use ethanol.

I was just thinking about coffee filters. Why use a paper filter? Wouldn't a screen mesh filter be better?
I've been using them in my coffee makers for about 20 years. Don't have to keep buying paper filters.

I would personally use a paint filter. They are available at any place that sells paint. Never had any problems with them.

Yep, a screen mesh would be better. The one I use is a super-fine bronze screen that unfortunately got dusty/dirty due to owner negligence. I wasn't trying to be cheap, I just wondered if one could be used in a pinch. Moot point now, I replaced all the paint filters and am going to clean the screen with carb cleaner.

I was tempted to use one of my ProMaster UV filters but the threads didn't match-up. ;-)

I always refuted the environmental sales pitch (less carbon dioxide) on technical grounds. Ten percent ethanol gas is a volume based percentage, when this is converted to a mass basis by means of soecific volumes you find no difference in the number of carbon atoms. So any reduction on CO2 must come from incomplete combustion. One must examine the detailed physical chemistry.

I haven't seen it referenced recently but I once read that it costs MORE in gasoline to produce the ethanol than you get back per gallon of ethanol. Think of the tractor fuel, harvesting, transportation, and whatever they do to turn it into ethanol.

The figure I read was 1.2 gals of gas to produce 1 gal of ethanol, with its lower energy output. Just googled it...

70 percent more energy to produce ethanol than you get from it. Thank you, Mr Govt!

Makes one wonder what the true carbon emissions total from a gallon of ethanol used would be.
