Nikon D500 problem.

Both my friend and I own the new Nikon D500 and have come across a problem with our D500's.

The issue is when in live view and the touch screen is active you can focus on a subject by touching the screen then when you take your finger off the screen it takes a photograph. When a flash is attached to the camera while doing the touchscreen method the flash will not fire, however if I press the shutter release instead of the touchscreen the flash fires.

Has anyone who owns a D500 found this problem and have a solution.

Let's not get off topic about how we should never buy the latest and greatest for just this reason.

I don't know that you are going to get many replies from owners since there probably aren't too many. :)

Maybe call Nikon?

Let us know what you find out.

Congratulations on your new Nikon D500 camera. Only owners of this camera can help you. I cannot. In case your post goes to the attic, I suggest you go to to You Tube Videos. They have a few video tutorials to select from. One is a 23 minute tutorial by Tony Northrup. I hope you solve your problem.

I don't know for certain, but the first thing that came to mind was...is there something in the menu to enable the flash when the screen is used to trigger the shutter? In other words, is there a setting that needs to be changed?

I could not find anything and the manual is not helpful in this regard either. I posted this knowing that their are a few others that have received their D500 and maybe they would try it out and report back what they found.

I just tested mine, live view and an SB500. tried with viewfinder first, flash fired, tried in live view with touch screen, camera focused, took shot and flash fired. So mine works like its supposed to. You may have some menu setting that is preventing the flash from firing, but I can't say what that would be.

No that only tells you how to set up touch screen, nothing about using flash with touch screen. The problem we believe has to do with two flash units (SB-800 and SB-900) which are not supported by this camera especially the SB-800, more in line with page 326. There does seem to be a problem with SB-800 units with different firmware versions as well as the SB-800 for some reason drains the camera battery real fast.

...interesting. While not a flash shooter normally (really don't like the look when shooting people in fill-mode, and it seems I can always tell when there's a flash involved in any given shot) I do own 2 SB-800's. And I will soon have a D500. Hard to believe the SB800 is not supported, but I'll
run some tests when I get the body and check back here. My purpose in acquiring the D500 has nothing to do with flash...for that I'm grateful. ;0)

I check everything I can out on the new camera. I just finished checking the SU-800 commander and the Phottix Odin TTL Flash Trigger/Receiver and they work perfectly.
