The "body language" does imply an intense focus and purpose.

I admit I'd be tempted to lighten the head, especially around its eye, and the tail feathers. But your caption indicates you were interested in a different - and more to reality - story. Any idea why such dirty looking head and tail feathers? The near-adult has a "dirty-head" look, but I haven't seen exactly like this. Was it fishing in muddy waters?

Linda, The waters here in South Louisiana can be very muddy and this eagle looks ruff and muddy for real. I got the shot near the very muddy Mississippi River.

It is two stops under exposed. If the brightness and contrast are properly adjusted it looks vastly better! Not just the highlights, but also the shadows are better. The detail in the dark feathers becomes visible, and it is simply fabulous.

I am interested in knowing how you get the information to know it is 2 stops(or is that an approximation?). Could you elaborate in layman terms for me Floyd?

It's only approximate, though it would not be hard to measure it.

What I did was pull the image up in an editor and look at the histogram. In this case the editor is GIMP, which has a very good histogram.

That is a really great image!

Thanks for looking Floyd, I PP again for the raw file added two stops and eagle looks better but the sky is now all white. I guess PP in layers is the next option.

Just re open it in Camera Raw or Lightroom. adjust the exposure shadows and clarity until ya bird is looking good. You will lose colour in the background but all the information is still there so just increase saturation of the blues and your sky comes back.
I did it to your jpeg it will be even easier working with the RAW file.
No need to touch layers my friend.

I took exposure down one stop, shadows to around +50, Clarity to +25 and blue saturation to suit what you feel looks good

Thanks Billy for taking time to analyze the image and suggest the proper PP.

Thanks Walt, This photo has been taking up drive for over a year and just rediscovered it while cleaning out unwanted images.

Hi, Red Arrow,
Lessee...
perfect exposure, focus, and composition. I suspect the image perfectly reflects the lighting of the circumstances prevailing at exposure. Puts me in mind of many eagle sightings over the Chillkat River in exactly that light.
Congrats on not fiddling with supposed "improvements" in pp.

This image fall down in just one respect...
It's not on my wall!

Absolutely stellar capture!

The sky is all white because you went too far! You followed the "rule", and used exactly the 2 stops that I said was approximate. Don't take pictures by measuring according to rules, and don't edit that way either! Instead, look at the picture and decide what actually looks best.

I edited the JPEG that you posted. No doubt the RAW file can be done better, but this shows the potential. This involved adjusting brightness and contrast, and juggling that with saturation. I also blurred the sky and shifted the color slightly to make it less blue-gray. Because this was done starting with a JPEG there is a halo around the bird where the sky is in the background, and there is more noise than if it had been done starting with the RAW file.

Thanks Dave, I was watching a Red-tailed when the eagle flew between the hawk and myself and was lucky that the camera was up and able to catch a short burst.
