I uploaded a photo gallery into Smugmug. A few of the pictures didn't look like the same as the JPEG that I uploaded- they were "washed out". After on-line chatting with smugmug, we saw a difference in looking at the gallery in Google vs IE- google looked "normal".
Any experiences with this? must be something in IE I need to tweak to see it correctly?
First time this has come up- or I've never noticed before

Yes, make sure that you are uploading them as sRGB and not ProPhotoRGB or AdobeRGB. They must be sRGB colorspace to appear correctly on the web.

Googles browser is called Chrome, not Google. I figured out what you meant after a second or so as I'm sure many others did as well. Now we just have to deal with the others that are still searching for the "Google browser".

You show a screen cap of IE and Lightroom but not of Chrome. How are we to see what you're talking about if you don't show both items in question?

Call the webmaster for SmugMug and ask them which browser has the highest priority for "optimization" in their pecking order.

Websites are often optimized for one browser at the highest level of efficiency with other browsers taking. This is a common tack for the people who optimize the web sites.

I have been using Internet Explorer to list on eBay for many years, since I found out about "optimization for browsers" on web sites. I contacted eBay and found out their first choice on optimization is IE.

This is something we as users cannot control except to use the best optimized browser ourselves and hope the websites choose the most highly used browser.

Who knows what's going to happen when IE is no longer available and Edge comes into play.

Please, use the "quote reply" button when replying to someone, and always, use the 'store original' check box so we can see the pictures you load better.

Ok here are the two screenshots of the pix- one in CHROME and one in IE. The CHROME one is the darker one

So a dumb question on this- I can see the difference because I posted- if people are looking at this online and are using IE I'm assuming they will see the same "poor exposure" shot?

Thanks, unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. I do know there are differences between the browsers, just didn't realize it was quite that drastic.

There is a reason why almost no web developers use IE. It uses its own series of extensions which are not supported by any other browser and is usually behind the technology curve in terms of adoption of universal standards. From a high of 95% penetration, as of March 2016, only 12% of browser usage is any release of IE (Chrome is over 60%). IE is also notorious for users not updating to the latest browser version and therefore older versions no longer being supported by web developers.

The technology and code of the web is constantly improving. Older browsers often often can't render a page correctly. IE is itself being replaced by Microsoft Edge going forward.

i'm really glad for this conversation! i use smugmug... and several of my friends use linux+firefox. i had no idea they might be seeing my pix differently than what i see. next time i visit them, i'll have to check it out.

btw, last week i saw a blurb about a new laptop that claims to be using adobeRGB as their display colorspace. unfortunately, i don't remember the brand or model.

That's a great link insofar as SmugMug is concerned. In addition, remember that this applies to all web sites, not just SmugMug, and not just photographic sites and forum.

This pertains to all web sites on the internet, if the site truly optimizes with regard to O/S and Browsers supported. Many sites optimize for one browser specifically and then deal with the other browsers.

Thanks for that link from SmugMug.

I have a friend who I call the Anal Artist. She has a particularly bad attitude when it comes to this issue. She literally gets livid when she thinks about the fact that her art on her website may be seen differently by the public and/or her market depending on the browser each individual uses.

I am SOOO HAAAPPY not to be her webmaster. Gosh I'm happy not to be anybody's webmaster.

While the browsers may be different, the taking of screen shots brings the properties of your computer display and computer 'screen shot' application into the equation as well. Are you able to download the actual image file in a way that does not alter the picture file. When I screen shot with my Mac I get a 72 ppi image, per Photoshop.
