If a person were to be looking for a very good quality all in one zoom lens for a full frame Nikon DSLR camera, what would be your choices for a zoom lens that might be, let's say, 18mm-300mm or perhaps, 24mm-300mm, etc, etc....????? Actually, I am speaking of an all in one zoom lens that comes close to the ranges that I have listed, but the lens doesn't have to be exactly the ranges that I have listed.

I have been told that Nikon makes a 28-300mm zoom lens with image stabilization, but some people say that it doesn't produce images that are sharp ? Do any of you have any suggestions as to what manufacturer makes a lens comparable to the Nikkor 28-300, but the comparable lens made by another manufacturer actually provides sharp images ?

Thanking you in advance,
~ Doug ~

I think you forgot the most important criteria - where on your vacation will you be using it? ( )

Seriously, I do appreciate your response as I do all responses and I took yours in good stride. Hopefully, you had taken mine equally as well..

If you have noticed, the amount of those who post upon our forum seem to be dwindling of late whereby gentlemen as you and I are ones among the few who keep the ball rolling..

How is the weather in your neck of the woods ? Here in Ohio, we've had a week of above average temperatures, average amounts of rainfall, and plenty of blue skies, ~ all of which have provided for us lush green lawns, beautiful blossoms on our fruit trees, and plenty of opportunities for camera bugs to get outdoors with their cameras.

In closing, I send you best regards and wish for you a great day.

Cool & a bit wet here. I was in Columbus about 20 years ago, in July. Hot and humid! Nice countryside, though. I was actually supposed to be in Texas now, but had to cancel because my travel agent cannot find a boat to let! Hopefully those folks can save some of that water from running into the sea.

Hey my friend, I went through that search, the 28-300 Nikon was the closest I came to what I wanted. But I wanted super sharp, I caved in and got the new 300f4 With VR, 26 0z. an incredible lens and as sharp as anything I have. I already had the 24-105 Sigma Art lens and the new 20 mm 1.8 Nikon. Not the solution that I thought I would end up with, but I am happy. Let my know how you end up. You might get in contact with MT Shooter, he is extremely up on all of the zoom lenses, and even sells many of them.

Just a thought!

Phil

Sorry to hear about your agent having to cancel your trip. Hopefully, you aren't missing out on a fishing trip in inland lakes or saltwater fishing in the Gulf ? Both are to be had in some of the fine waters that Texas has to offer.. Fine lakes for fishing and, then, there is the Gulf which has just about every species a fellow would love to catch. Then, again, you may had plans to cruise some of the rivers into many of the tributaries Texas has to offer ?

Anyway, I hope all gets resolved for you whereby you can let a boat at a later date and have an enjoyable time !

Take care,
~ Doug ~

No such FX lens. Closest choices are the 28-300mm models from Tamron and Nikon.

Phil, it's great to hear from you again ! That 300mm f/4 Nikon lens that you have is a lens that provides super sharp images. I purchased the same about 1-1/2 years ago and, wow, does it ever produce razor sharp, high quality images! Its razor sharp images along with the contrast and colors it yields will impress the most discerning !

You may correct me if I am mistaken, but in several places I have read about this particular Nikon lens being one of the best mid range telephoto lenses made. Yes, I am sure that some photographers may prefer one of Nikon's faster telephoto lenses, but for the money, this fine lens gets 'er done ! Actually, the one that I had purchased was fully refurbished by Nikon ~ or did I purchase a 300 f/4 Canon lens refurbished by Canon? Hmmm, you know, I can't immediately really remember which was which, but I do own both, both produce high quality images; yet, one was purchased new and the other was purchased refurbished. Anyway, both were received looking brand new and both remain looking brand new ! :) AND, hey, everyone needs a quality 300mm in their arsenal of lenses, don't you think!

Be well, Phil, and I will send you an email message later on today. As for now, Vicki and I are just about ready to take Maggie out into our garden with us whereby the three of us will be planting a couple of tomato plants in a couple of our old 1/2 whiskey barrels and who cares about frost ~ we will just cover them over with 5 gallon buckets> :):) AND, if time permits, I will post a photo or two of them here on our forum.

Any zoom starting with a focal length of 18mm is going to be a cropped camera lens not a full frame lens...so MTshooter's suggestion of a 28-300 zoom comes the closest to meeting your requirements.

I don't think there is a super zoom that is known for sharpness. If I am only taking two lenses with me and want to cover the most I generally take my 17-35 and 70-300. The 17-35 is a great walk around lens for most photography and does well in low light. The 70-300 comes in when I want to really reach out. If I'm only bringing one lens, my 28-70 is a good compromise. I won't have much reach but it goes decently wide and is fast enough for most situations.
