All-in-one travel lens?

I am going to be spending 2-3 months traveling the east coast/deep south this coming fall and would like to have a decent all-in-one lens for those occasions when carrying two or three lenses isn't practical. I'll be carrying a Nikon D810 and have looked at the Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR, which would be ideal except for the mixed reviews it has received from various reviewers ( http://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-28-300mm-vr/6 gives it a thumbs down, Ken Rockwell http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/28-300mm.htm gives it thumbs up).

My questions are:
1. Do you have any experience with this lens and would you recommend it?
2. Do you know of a similar lens that performs better for a similar price?

The 28~300 is a very good lens. I purchased mine about 2 years ago. It's been on my camera 95% of the time. If I had a choice to take one lens on a trip like you mentioned, that'd be the one.

I have a D90,D600, and a D810. I have a Nikon 20mm 1.8G ED, a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1, a Zeiss Otus 1.4/85mm and the Nikon 28-300mm. Of these lens, my 28-300 gets used about 90% of the time. It is my walk around lens most days.
If I were to take a trip and only one lens, the 28-300 would be it.

in my opinion, the 28-300 will not give you the quality of a 28 prime nor the quality of a 300 prime, but for the purpose it is designed for, it is a very good lens and not lacking enough quality to justify carrying and changing the two primes, plus any other lens in the range it covers. I do not think you will be disappointed in the lens. if you have time to test it, you may want to consider renting the lens before you buy it to see if it delivers the quality you expect.

Depends on what type of subjects you like to shoot and where you are going !! Also, I always sujest that you look at past travel shots and see what the metadata is with regards to lens length. My favorite Nikon "walk around" lens is a 16-85. It seems to cover most of what I want to shoot, but remember everyone is different. If I am walking around Manhattan, I usually add my Sigma 10-20 in aLowePro quick change pouch. I ususally have a 70-200 with me but leave it in the car. I can always go back & get it if I want it.

How often do you shoot in the 200-300 range of your 28-300 ??

For your specified purpose I highly recommend it. A great all-in-one travel lens choice for full frame shooters.

I tried to travel with one "do all" lens and felt to confined, finding shots I wanted, but just didn't like the end result. Now I take my D7100 with the Nikon 50mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.8 and Tamron 18-200 f/3.5. The 35 & 50 are small and tuck away in my small bag, the Tamron is a nice, general, all around that I use 80% of the time. I just finished a fly to Chicago/road trip to Phoenix and got everything I needed with all the camera gear was a part of the carry on.

For your stated purpose, I suggest the Nikon 4.3-357mm lens. As an added bonus, Nikon throws in a P900 body.

I have a D7100 and use that lens exclusively. I am very satisfied with it. I shoot wild life and display the better ones at a friends restaurant with some success
