I still use floppys for files updated every month. I make changes, add new data, and then "save" and tell it to overwrite. Does that not rewrite the whole file and therefore "refresh" what is magnetically written on the floppy? I am not very geekish, and don't want to lose any more data. Thanks!!

My Korg i2 keyboard (a MIDI music workstation) uses floppy discs for storage, and I can still access data I wrote to disc in 1997. I have never had a hard drive failure on any of my computers to date. Yes, I may be gambling, but I am not paranoid about the failure of magnetic media.

I have had one hard-drive fail. My son has had two external hard drives fail. Don't be paranoid but do know that all drives fail eventually.

I think I should thank you for posting this, despite the possibility that some Hogs could attack you for daring to correct someone's grammar, spelling, or usage in a posted Topic. But just to make certain that what you assert is correct, would you mind, please, providing a reference?

As a tangent, I just read somewhere (but didn't make note of the reference,) that the word 'internet' need no longer have its first letter capitalized. If true, how does one update the automated spell-checkers to be "cognizant" of this?

I can provide one reference. The AP Style Guide, 2015, page 208 (plurals are covered on pages 206-208).

Under the heading "MULTIPLE LETTERS:" it says to "add S: She knows her ABCs. I gave him five IOUs. Four VIPs were there."

Be that as it may, magnetic media can lose effectiveness with time. Ask any studio recording engineer, for that matter - old tapes sometimes aren't recoverable for the same reason. And it's not about the heads touching the media necessarily; the iron oxide can simply lose some of the magnetically encoded information.

That said, making backups regardless is just prudent.

Or, dont. It's your data.

I am not disputing that magnetic media deteriorates, and I am not advocating to ignore backups. But just as some people relate bad experiences, I simply wanted to show that it's not necessarily always as bad as some folks make it out to be. And maybe I haven't been as lucky as some have been unlucky.

Misuse of apostrophes is my biggest pet peeve. I have to exert great effort to not get upset whenever I read stuff on the web as I am sure it has to be the most common grammatical error made by American English writers. I used to attempt to correct these errors, but eventually gave it up. Too much effort, and nobody seemed to care.

Thanks for trying yet again.

It's happened before and will likely happen again. I've seen plenty of mud slinging around here with all kinds of insults and such. De rigueur for this site.
