Thanks for the comments, Piet. I think I'm ready to concede that "moody and grim" wins out over picturesque :-) . I think I'm familiar with the idea that castles were about more than bloody conflicts, and more went on within than plotting the next skirmish, so I see more than the dark past that we hear about so much in the history books. But the dark stuff was a reality and deserves its place in our recollections.
