at the entry of any national park. you do not need to apply for it, you just purchase it at the gate.

Correct, because you need to provide both proof of age and that you live in the US. Your driver's license will satisfy both.

The senior pass was free for many years.
Times change. Just my opinion, but with our national parks billions of dollars behind on maintenance, I've never regretted the $10 cost for my senior lifetime pass (really $20, since I forgot to bring it once and purchased a second), or the annual passes I purchased before I became eligible, or any individual entrance fees I paid over the years.
All a bargain. And I've got a few good photos to remind me!
