OK - now I have something to work with - go on dowm Interstate 80 to hwy 12 West to Sonoma then continue West to Santa Rosa then to Sabastopol eending at Bodaga Bay after visiting Bodaga Bay head south on the coastal roads to Point Rays (spl) State Park Drakes Bay then further south to Stinson Beach after Stinson follow Sir Frances Drake road back to State hwy 1 and south to Sausolito - turn off into Sausolito enjoy the site through town and follow that street south it wll take you to the Golden Gate and the Marin headlands for great views of SF- Alcatraz in SF you are on your own.

Ooops!!! Sorry, I should have given more details. I will be flying into Sacromento to stay with my daughter and her family about 40 miles west of there. We want to go to the beach of course!! And maybe to Reno, LA, etc. I've been to Oregon alot and loved it there, but not to Califormia. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

alot of driving to hit reno and la,if just going for a week If your starting in sacramento and only do have a week i'd stay in that area and go to yosemite and if you want to go to reno drive through the park to the east and head up to reno via carson city, virginia city and hit lake tahoe than head out to the coast around san francisco. with just a week your going to have to give up something. also napa valley in the area

I have lived in this area most of my life and traveled it extensively - I am now 74- any part of this suggestion will be very scenic and enjoyable - I purposly left off any un-nessesary freeway travel If you are already west of Sac near Fairfield take State hwy 12 east (be sure and load up on Jelly Beans at the Jelly Belly factory there at I-80 & Hwy 12 - take 12 through the valley of farms -vinyards and orchards to Hwy 88 just past Clements Hwy 88 is one of the most scenic routs through the Sierras to the Carson Valley about 40mi south of Reno - After crossing the Pacific Crest at Carson Pass you are driving down a very long beautiful mountain meadow Hwy 89 intersects and heads north by makeing a quick jog north on Hwy 89 to Hwy 50 you will also pass through So. Lake Tahoe and around the east side of Lake Tahoe and then drop down into Nevada at Carson City as you go throu Carson City on Hwy 395 - Hwy 50 makes a turn off east- a few miles east on Hwy 50 is Dayton and the turn off north to Gold Hill & Virginia City - you can Visit Virginia City and take the road out of town that leads to Steam Boat Spring & Hwy 395 for a quick and scenic drive to Reno - after visiting Reno head west on I-80 back towards Sacramento - get off the freeway at Truckee and take the old Hwy 40 through town and you pass Donner Lake and the site of the Donner Party historical campsite and take old hwy 40 along the Shore of Donner Lake and up the old Hwy to Rainbow Bridge - a large cement bridge-the only one too - you can't miss it as your mind will be begging for a place to pull over and photo the lake and forest below you, go on up over Donner Pass and get back on I-80. Several miles later just past Cisco Grove at the intersection of I-80 & State Hwy 20 turn west ( one of my favorite drives through the forest in all the west)and continue to Nevada City - a very Historical town -turn south here on Hwy 49 4 miles further is Grass Valley ( these 2 towns were the very heart of the Gold Rush) then follow Hwy 49 to Auburn where 49 and I-80 meet then on west to home.

Even tho I was born and raised in San Diego, I'm gona defer to the "locals" for their comments. However, I suggest a trip to Sutter's Mill and other historical sites.
A drive down Hwy 79 (the Mother Load Hwy), would be nice. (You could head west to I-5 and home almost anytime.) Yosemite NP, shouldn't be too crowded. Will you use a digital or film camera this time? How long has your daughter lived in the area? She should know some good spots.

I am sure you ment Hwy 49 - through the Gold Country - So many many spectacular places to go in most any part of CA. I now live on Hwy 88 at the 3,000 ft elevation - just at the snow line - 15 mi east of Jackson there on Hwy 49 - one of the many Gold mining towns of the west I lived in as may father followed the booms & bust working as a hard rock miner.

Do the wine country - San Francisco is a great walking city - skip LA and go to Yosemite, redwoods - San Diego is nice but quite a drive from Sacromento. I was in southern CA last November. San Diego does have some great places to visit - don't forget Coronado - the hotel there is something to behold.

Hi FullmoonRoses: I would suggest Fishermans Warf, San Francisco, Alcatraz, The back side of the Goldengate Bridge. There is an old military base there. Then the other direction. Donner Pass, Reno, Lake Taho, Sutters Mill. All along hwy 49 are various old mining towns. You can travel down hwy 395 to Mono Lake (It's an inland Salt Lake) and over to the Ghost town of Bodie... All great photo opportunities... Have fun.

There are too many things to visit here in CA in a limited time. All of the suggestions so far have been great. If you want the coast, Point Reyes National Seashore is beautiful, and the previous route suggestion is a good one.

If you are into the outdoors, you can't leave without viewing Yosemite N.P. You will not have anything like it in MI. Hands down. Go to the valley and over the pass to Mono Lake and circle back through Reno if you want to see that area. Virginia city if you are into historical places.

If it's city stuff you prefer, San Francisco is close for the day.

I like the desert, but it is too far if you don't have the extra days to spend exploring. Besides, it will be warming up in those parts by the time June rolls around.

I am going to California next month for a week's vacation and would like some advice about taking pictures - pictures I just HAVE to have, don't waste my time on - that kind of things. It's my first visit to the state. Now I'm just a simple country girl and am a little nervous about a big city, so what would you suggest?

This is the beauty of California. We have deserts, mountains, forests and awesome ocean views. Pick your pleasure and enjoy.

In Sacramento, visit old town and, in particular, the California State Railroad Museum.

40 miles west will put you near Vacaville. You're pretty much at the heart of everything. Unfortunately a week is not nearly enough time to take in even a small part of that area.

Enjoy your vacation.

I have digital cameras (3 actually). My daughter and her family have lived in the area about 1-1/2 years, he is stationed at Beale AFB. She's the one that said we should go to Reno, etc.
