Bought a 72mm Hoya HD3. Expensive but nothing sticks to it.

I'm considering a purchase of a couple of 77mm ND filters and trying to decide on a brand. I'm leaning towards either B+W or Hoya. Are these considered good filters? If not, what are some recommendations?

I like both but have gone with Hoya. Just liked them better. No scientific reason just the way they worked.

I've had both brands and prefer Hoya.

I choose B+W. They have excellent service.

I've been a Hoya fan for a very long time.

Stay away from those with plastic or Aluminum filter rings. Brass is the only way to go (if you ever want to remove it from the lens).

I would second the recommendation for B&W, which are the filters I use. As with most things, you get what you pay for. The better ones ARE more expensive. Glass is not the only thing that matters! Best of luck.

With the exception of a few Zeiss filters, all of my other filters are top of the line B+W filters. They, (Zeiss and B+W) offer protection for my lenses, but most importantly, none of them lessen image quality whatsoever.

Stay away from most other brands of filters if you can ! Tests have proven that they can alter and lessen image quality.

I have both Hoya and B&W filters.
I find the quality of construction to be slightly better with the B&W.

Check out the Breakthrough Photography brand. I have the 10 stop X3 and it is an excellent filter, with a 25 yr. warranty.
In these tests, it outperformed all the rest.

Interesting article - and the writer denies that Hoya's assessment of the ghosting issue is valid. Well, I have both an ND400 and a ND64, and I have used them with a D700 and D800 and Hoya is 100% correct - if I don't take the extra precaution to block light from coming into the sensor area, it will cause a "fog" or streaking/ghosting. Luckily these two models have viewfinder shutters that you can flip down when doing long exposures in daylight. I don't have the ghosting issue.

Hoya has many grades of filters some less expensive and some very much more. Their top filters are very good. Ny advice- get the best you can afford, ( I hate when i hit N instead of M- why are they right next to each other)?
