I am so new to this that I'm trying an experiment . These pics are my first attempt at picasa and I invite any comments your would like to make. I'm finding things that I dislike about the screen backed cameras as I find them difficult to use outdoors. And, Haven't figured out the delay factor yet.

No one program seems to be able to do it all for me. There are a couple of other freebies available that do a better job than Picassa IMHO, faststone image viewer and photoscape. the learning curve isn't difficult and easy to download. Either one will help you control the dynamic range of your images. also there are flip up hoods available online in various sizes to fit your camera, protects from scratches when not in use and shades the screen when it is. I suspect your delay factor is the result of not half pressing your shutter button and HOLDING IT until you actually shoot.

I agree with you about the focus screen... its like trying to use a view camera with a black focusing cloth. (the daylight just makes it hard to see the image) also holding the camera at arms length is not as sturdy as holding a SLR braced against your face... and finally.. the delayed shutter drove me crazy because i couldn't get the expressions i wanted and the action was usually over when the image was taken... so i saved up and purchased the cheapest Nikon SLR i could find... you don't need an expensive camera because it 6 inches behind the lens that counts....

Just a vehicle track through the area that I hunt in . Was sitting on my deerstand and enjoying the morning and was taken by the snowy trees. # 2 is an area about two miles north of the tree area. All are near where I live in so. MN.

Good point J.D. and is one I try to practice . I was trying to get a photo of one of our club's trap shooters breaking a clay target, don't have "burst" on my camera . About a dozen trys, no sucess.

BeFunky is a cool site to edit pics, too. I've used that one and like the results I can get from it.

ftpecktim, I also use Picasa and am bumping up against its limits. Will advanced aviary allow me to tone down only specific areas in a photo to get rid of glare, remove extraneous object in an image (power lines, items that mar they image but I didn't notice them when I snapped it, etc. . So, the kinds of tweaks one can make in Photoshop?

ggirl, yes it will do anything you need, I used this years ago before i got photoshop and if you ever get photoshop it is a easy transfer.

Thank you very much, Tim. Really good info. I'll check it out. For some reason I feel a bit intimidated by PS - probably silly, but I just want to sneak up on advancing my photo editing skills and don't want to get overwhelmed by a plethora of options right away.

Dave,

I am not entirely sure what you mean by "delay factor"? Please explain. If you are saying that there is a delay between your pressing the shutter button all the way, and when the camera actually takes the picture. . .then I think you have an improper camera setting engaged for taking single images. With the proper camera settings, your camera should take pictures instantly when the shutter button is pressed. If you are talking about something else, please explain.
