I recently purchased a brand new Canon G9X camera, and am curious to get the opinion of my learned photography brethren. Was this a wise choice for the bucks?

What do YOU think? Do you like it? If the answer is yes, then it was worth it. Some people are never happy no matter how great the equipment - some are satisfied with their cell phones. Focus on getting better at the important part of photography. Look around in the photo gallery. You will see terrible shots with the best equipment and also see amazing ones with some inexpensive gear. It is the person behind the camera that counts

It has a 1 inch sensor and 20 pixels and fits in a shirt pocket...whats not to like? Very good reviews about picture quality.

I don't see how the G9X qualifies as a "p&s" camera. It offers manual and semi-manual exposure modes, has a viewfinder, incorporates a decent size sensor, and has RAW output option. What about it makes it a p&s? Certainly you can use it as a p&s camera, but you can do that with most consumer level DSLR cameras too.

I would classify the G9X as an advance compact camera no doubt. :)

The G9X qualifies as an advanced point & shoot. Compact with a fixed lens.

Unless you've been lurking in the background for a while, first let me say welcome!

"my learned photography brethren..." How kind!

As to your question, did you research before purchasing? Seems odd for you to wait until after the purchase to ask.

"Was this a wise choice for the bucks?"

If you end up using your new toy frequently and enjoy it thoroughly, then yes. If GAS sets in immediately, then no.

A camera specifically designed for the novice. A camera which can generate reasonably acceptable images automatically, simply by pointing and shooting at the subject; a camera with only a select number of basic functions that a novice can comprehend with little effort or technical understanding.

Are you asking this because you still have a few days left to return it but want people here on UHH to vet it for you after you went ahead and purchased it? Why not give US the reasons you bought it in the first place so we know your own vetting process? I don't know...it just strikes me as odd that you want opinions AFTER the fact. I surely hope you don't take this route with other things in life, like eating at the Greasy Spoon restaurant and getting diarrhea then wondering if you should have eaten there. When it comes to things about photography, please come here first BEFORE you make your decision because there really are a bunch of very knowledgeable people here to help guide you.

It's a good choice if you are looking for a compact camera that will take good pictures. Aside from pictures, you have to consider the camera's features, like Wi-Fi, GPS, panorama, etc.

See this review from amazon buyer. Of course it's just someones opinion but it will give you things to consider:

Wouldn't it be better to ask the question BEFORE you purchase it?
