I am new here, and i have been following the discussions. I have been told by several people that RAW is the best way to shoot. However, i have not been able to figure out how to edit properly and save in a different format on CS2. Any suggestions?

If you are shooting Nikon, the best software to support RAW files is NX2.....however, NX2 is not the best software or file management system by a long shot. I depend on two software programs

LR4 - Will support your RAW files, outstanding File Management System, and excellent in making the necessary tweaks to your photos so that they are ready to publish or print.

Adobe Photoshop, CS5 - does everything else that LR4 cannot do....esp in the masking and pixel manipulating department (liquify. Brushes, Free Transform, Filters for example) - Monday May 7th, Adobe will release CS6.

It operates too slow, even with computers loaded with high end graphics cards and an abundance of RAM.

I shoot Nikon cameras and have tried the Nikon NX programs. But I have had the best success both with file management and with pp work by using lightroom. It simply takes things to a whole new level. If you want to get familiar quickly with the workings of lightroom, get Scott Kelby's book----none better.

If you are shooting with a Nikon check out CaptureNX2. Doesn't have the "Bells & Whistles" of Photoshop or Paintshop but it does real good within its editing range

Lightroom is the answer for processing RAW. I have tried the bundled Canon software (DPP) and it just does not cut it for efficient handling of a large amount of images. Another inexpensive utility for RAW you might want to look at is BreezeBrowser Pro.

i would suggest Lightroom. It is a raw editor and a great tool for cataloging, and to compliment lightroom if you can afford it photoshop cs5 or better.

I noticed that you said you want to shoot RAW because others told you to. Wrong reason. Try shooting Jpeg and RAW and decide for yourself. Each way has its upside and downside. If you like the results of the camera doing the RAW adjustments for you, the ease of not having to have RAW adjustment in your workflow, and smaller, faster files then shoot Jpeg. If you want total control not loosing any information in compression (as Jpeg does) then buy a good RAW adjustment/file management software like Lightroom or Aperture as you are probably going to want to go there anyway. Just something to think about.

You might make sure you have the latest updates to CS2 so it can handle your RAW files.

If you have a Canon the DPP program that comes with the camera is very good.

You can edit with your CS2 but you will need the plug in (free). Check on Adobe's website for your particular camera model. You also have Bridge (part of your CS2) which is a great program for organizing your photos.

I shoot in RAW because I am not a good enough photographer to shoot in Jpeg. I need all the editing tools available. Editing in ACR really helps.

I shoot RAW with a Canon T2i, use Lightroom 4 and love it.

I don't agree with your statement. Raw gives you control that jpeg doesn't allow. Jpeg's have less information and are guided by internal presets which can't generally be changed after you take the photo but Raw digital negatives generally can be changes in post.
