I thought big guy would look good on the left side, but then realized that he dwarfs the guy in the green shirt on the other photo and that he looks too small in front and probably unnatural if enlarged (2nd photo) I then but him behind in the same spot. I thought about right corner like the other two attempts, but I was concerned about the shadows over there. As it turns out, I think that is the best spot for him.

jaynave,
The first one will work best . He is 6'4" and 240 and looks goon the back of everyone. Should have included that information with request. Thanks for doing it both ways.

I did it about the same as Bob. I used Photoshop all the way. When using Photoshop you can go about doing the same things but in different ways. Our way is usually the most common way for us not always the quickest way.
1) I opened both pictures into photoshop separately.
2) Big guy (BG) used the magic wand and selected him. Copied him and went to group picture and pasted.
3) Had to decide how big he should be. I looked at the knees and thought most everyone has about the same size knees and made BG the proper size with command T using transform and made him larger clicking a corner while holding shift key and pulling out.
4) Now that I had him about the right size I changed my BG layer opacity to about 45. I could now see both pictures and tried moving BG around to see how he best fit in and as you can see we both thought on the right. Returned opacity to 100%
5) Now having decided that I used the magic wand tool and selected most of the area that he would be in on the group picture and made a mask.
6) Make sure your group picture is unlocked. Move BG layer to bottom of layers. Now with the move tool move BG till you have him in place where you think appropriate. I had a hard time deciding if I should turn him a little counter clockwise but decided against it because his legs looked off.
7) Now cleaned up mask on group picture around BG. Done.

I am sure this is basic stuff for many Hogs but hope it helped some beginners with layers and masks. I learned the most from lessons on CreativeLive.com

Good outline of your process Jim Pops. I did basically the same thing last night, but I think I was too tired to explain coherently. Good call on using the knees to size. Since he was standing next to "green shirt guy" in the other photo I was trying to line up BG and GSG head position relative to the other photo so BG could be his correct height. He does fit better on the right where you placed him. It is interesting how many little details need to be considered on something that appears simple at first glance.

Added some canvas to the right side as viewed to give a little more room for the added subject. Lightened the shadows on some faces.

I have not had time to tackle Lightroom yet and was looking for some help. My tennis team won the city championship in the 65 years old division .And of course took photos. One member was not present and was able to get a photo of him later. What I would like to to do is add him to the group photo . He is the tall guy in the white shirt. If someone could add him to the group photo it would be much appreciated because everyone is asking me for the winning team photo.

Not a good task for Lightroom. Photoshop or some other layer-capable program (Paintshop Pro, Gimp, etc.) is needed for this.
