That's my problem. I hate to throw things out. Even the stuff I take in burst mode.

After several years of that I took January and went through my catalog. Picked one shot of those types of things and deleted the rest. Of course everything has already been backed up, so the files are not gone forever, but they might as well be. If they're not in my catalog I'll probably forget they exist.

Managed to reduce my catalog from about 54K to 18K images. The early years were fairly light so I could go through 2-3 years per day. The more recent years had a lot more stuff to go through so some years took a couple days to go through.

Now if I can keep that discipline I won't have to go through that again. Since I back everything up before going through post, I can tell myself that I'm not really throwing anything out. Just putting it out of the way.

C'mon Mark. You're retired, you've got time, it's winter. Get a nice chair, grab that book, get a highliter, make notes. At least read the import & develop chapters. Very helpful.

SLR lounge have a great series of video's working with lightroom. Plus doing a shoot beforehand.

With the lightroom tutorials it starts with a shoot dividing into scenes doing an initial cull and picks reviewing the picks and processing them with a particular look, it tends to work better if a series of photographs have a consistent style to them rather than being all over the place.

My method is almost never read a manual. That way, I can flounder around for decades, stay alive, keep busy and spend hours on UHH.
Thanks for the kind encouragement. I do have the time.
Ciao,
Mark

Sometimes watch a video or 2 serge ramelli (might be spelt right) manages to entertain a bit on his youtube channel but after a few photo's you tend to know what he is going to do which is good since it's a development work flow you can use. He isn't great for a series of images but others can be.

One thing about lightroom is its sliders, all the same size. Some you will want to adjust every time, some never touch. Trouble is you do not know which to tweak and which to leave alone. Another reason to see other people's work flows.

Serge has great videos and I got over his French accent quickly. He is cool. Anthony Morganty is great as well, speaks slowly and clearly. (Which is great for an old guy like me) And they are free although Serge would like you to buy some of his stuff. (Good stuff too)

I didn't know about the X to mark for deletion. After marking some images, what do I do next? Library module?

Select photo/delete rejected photos from menu (or command/delete) then you have to check whether you want them deleted from disk or just deleted from catalog only.

I've had it loaded for almost 2 years (CC). I used the catalog to some degree, mainly to view images. Yesterday, I photographed my Grandson's basketball game. I had 2000+ images to view, sort, adjust and upload to one of my Shutterfly sites. I usually view them, one at a time, in Windows Photo Viewer, open the better ones in PS, adjust, store, resize and upload to Shutterfly.

It seems many UHHers use LR to import images. I had never done that. Decided to try it. I love it!! It reduces the selection process to about 1/10 the time and I discovered I can open multiple photos in PS for editing. That's very cool. Now I just have to learn how to delete the ones not worthy of keeping from the catalog. Can't be too hard.

I may have to read the 500 page book by Scott Kelby I've had on my bookshelf for 4 months!!! DUH!!! I do have an excuse. Stubborn and old!

Have any of you worked with Alien Skins Exposure X. I'm getting a little jumpy about LR 5.7. Its still works great, but like Aperture I'm afraid of it fading into the sunset.

why? it works well directly with most camera camera raw formats indirectly with all via adobes free dng converter and is working fine with the latest windows and osx operating systems. The little it can't do compared with 6 can be achieved with external editors.
