I took some shots tonight of my eldest playing high school basketball. This is my first attempt at using my Tamron 70-200mm VC without a flash. I would like opinions as to what I could have done to improve the clarity of Collin's face. I went with f2.8 (Aperature Priority). The camera caused the camera to shoot @ 1/200, and I had the ISO set @ 1600. I did toy around with higher ISO's, but I still did not find great facial clarity in those photos. Any thoughts you might have are appreciated. Thanks!

You need to use 1/500. They are moving all the time.

I didnt read all the replys but to me, the first photo it looks like your focal point is his arm and not his face (IMHO) I would up the shutter speed, and the ISO.
I like the blur of the kids in the back, making your son stand out. so I would keep the Aperture where you had it.

You are right, but. It is difficult to follow the moving body, let alone the face.

I have shot a lot of My Grandson's High School and at a Local University where my Grandson's past Teammate has gone on to play Div II Basketball.
I have a friend who has given me a lot of tips. I will pass along some of them.
I use a Nikon D-610 - Basketball from sidelines 24-70mm F2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8
My settings over the time has evolved to using ISO up to 6400 or Higher if required in some dim lite gyms.
I set the Camera on Continuous Mode Focus, Single Point and try my best to get the Focus Point right on my Subject, especially the face if coming toward me on a lay up, etc.
One big change and it helped with the sharpness and sweet point of the lenses above. I shoot @ f4 and keep my shutter at a Min. of 1/500 sec...and Yes, I often have to push ISO UP.
My Photos have gotten much better, Yes some noise in in photos..Lightroom or a nice little App called "Neat Image" will reduce the noise on any photos that I may wish to share with others or print.
I hope my comments help You to continue to have fun.
Enjoy those Kids and make memories...
"An Image today is just a photo...In the Future that Photo will be 10,000 Memories"...
Thanks for posting and sharing the photos, nice shots.
Blessings,

You are doing all you can do. Shooting wide open, changing and trying different ISO settings to increase your shutter speed. That's about all you can do. To be honest, I think you would get sharper images with a better lens. Just because your 3rd party lens is an f/2.8 lens, doesn't mean it's sharp.
