I set my camera for a remote self-photo with focus on the area where I went to stand. I used the on-camera flash as the Controller and an SB-700 as the remote flash. Everything seemed to work as planned;however, my image appeared as a "ghost." I took several photos with the same result. Subsequently, I took photos in other parts of the house and all was okay.
Can someone explain what happened?
Just a thought but that looks like you took multiple photographs. My Pentax's do that up to nine times for one complete photo.

I was waiting for someone to propose that he is a ghost and didn't know it. Of course, coming from Treepusher, the knowledge might be certifiable. Bettis jumped right in. Maybe there is more to the story than we know. . .

Just wait until he tries to look at his reflection! LoL

Shutter speed slow + flash illuminated you for a fraction of a second.
It was a 3 SECOND exposure with flash being at the start of the exposure.
You stood there, it flashed, and then you moved out of the frame and it continued to expose the wall behind you.
I agree. It had to be exposed when you were in the shot for less than the exposure time when you were out to the shot. Double exposed for the whole thing, you can see the pan behind the legs...

Would not his moving result in a 'smeared' image of him.
Ever see "The Sixth Sense" about the kid who says "I see dead people?" Bruce Willis didn't realize he was already dead. Better check it out.
I once had a film photo of a chair with a 'ghost' of me and I prized it many fold. Save your ghost pic, prize it, and trot it out whenever you need to show them whipper snappers a thing or two. :)

It's a ghost. Not photoghosting, but a real ghost. It's the ghost of your evil twin.
Maybe this isn't what you wanted, but it makes an interesting picture. Be sure to save this. I think it makes a great picture.
Almost looks like the flash operated during the second shutter actuation.

Since the top of his head is cut off and a bit of the toes too, he just leaked out.
Actually, a 3 full seconds to expose the room and he was probably in it for maybe 1/2 second, the flash exposed him properly and his smear was not in the frame long enough. If he had stood relatively still with a little wavering for the full 3 seconds, he would have been smeared within a flash exposure of him.
This reminds me of a photo a friend had taken at a wedding. He used a long exposure to record the banquet room. During the exposure, one of the help was walking across the room carrying a candle. The person did not record because not enough light was reflected off of her, but the lit candle left a wavering line across the scene.
Also similar to using a long exposure while photographing in a dark room while swinging a light stick. The light stick will leave a streak recording its path while the person swinging the light stick will not record, or very little based on how much light from the stick reflects off of the person. By wearing black clothes and hood, even that can be minimized leaving just the streak of light.
