I used it two days prior it worked perfect, turned it on and snapped a photo of the grandson. The camera focused fine beeped snapped the shutter on the live view screen there was a small image saying image can't be displayed, I turned it off replaced the SD card and changed to a fully charged battery. Turned it on nothing on the live view the top LCD displayed the shutter would not respond or live view when it was turned off again it would never turn back on. This has been an excellent camera up to this point, always kept in camera bag when not in use. I have sent it back to Canon to get an estimate on the repair costs. I hope to hear something soon, I was just wondering if any others have had any issues with theirs. Mine was 4 months out of warranty when it quit.

I sure will, I searched google and canon forums it seems a few have had issues with theirs too.

A "few" issues is not unusual for any mass produced item. I have not heard that this is a systemic problem for the 70D.

The problem likely is lead-free solder. All current electronics, trying to be "green," have adopted non-lead solder and the solder used develops electrically active crystals, like stalactites and stalagmites, which eventually make the electronics "go crazy."

I have a digital Hasselblad which has "gone crazy" and no longer works. The problem is so common (it happens, eventually, to ALL Hasselblad DSLRs) that Hasselblad has a fixed set of prices to replace the boards in the camera and lens. In my case, about $1,300. The camera may work for three or four years and, another $1,300. Guaranteed cash flow for Hasselblad, and the user is a victim of the modern age.

I work in the electronics industry. I work for a company that puts sensors on the ocean bottom. They are permanently installed and expected to last over 20 years. We use lead free solder. Lead free solder can cause problems. It is more difficult to use than traditional solder but the requirement for lead free solder has been around for over 10 years.

We have over a million devices installed and have a very low failure rate. I am sure canon has used lead free solder for at least 10 years. They should be getting a very low failure rate by now.

Of course they may have received a bad batch of chips. It sounds like you are the lucky one that received the 1 in 1000000 devices that are destined to fail. It is a fairly new camera with some new technology. With any luck the new replacement parts will have been modified to solve the problem.

I purchased mine just after they came out. Had to return it to the dealer next day due to dead pixels. That one lasted a few months before I had to send it in for what Canon said was to replace the photo/picture box. What that is I never figured out. Now it just is having focus issues (sometimes). I have had seven Canons before this one and never had any issues with them. The features of the camera are great (ie: touch screen and video focus), when it works.

I had a 50D that died in between shots. It was purchased used from a reputable outlet and 2 months after the in store warranty died, so did the camera. Sent it to Canon repair and was told unfix-able due to water damage. When explaining that I never had the camera out in the wet they explained that the previous owner might have, and water damage can take months or years to do its damage and it affects all aspects of the camera, not just the MB.

Unfortunately, the only way to verify a used camera has not been subjected to water is to open it all up, inspect and reassemble. Here in Canada, that means sending it to Canon at a fixed $200 price tag. They decided to use a one price fits all repairs and if they need to go too much beyond the $200 then they simply claim it is not repairable. IMHO

I hope you do not end up in this category. Good luck.

I have had Canon cameras since 1980 and never had any problems. I now have an EOS 70D. Please keep us informed. I can't wait to see what Canon has to say.

Sorry to here of your bad luck and am interested in your results. I bought a 70D right after they came out, shoot 15 to 20 thousand photos per year and never had a problem with hard or software except for my incorrect interpretation of how to use it. My 70D is very good (for now). Please keep us informed and good luck

This is very interesting as I haven't read any similar complaints about the 60D, I've had that for almost three years with no problems. I thought they were basically the same camera except that the 70D had better video functions which do not interest me at all.

I've been shooting Canon for some years now without a single problem... especially this one. Best of luck on the repair.

Well, we all knows what happens (Will not say it for fear of offending the delicate sensitivities of the UHHers.) All I can say that 80 years of experience has taught me that Murphy was an optimist. And I have a 70D, too!

:) :-) :D :-D  :P :-P 8-)
