Has anyone had a canon 70D just die?

That is the "button" battery that powers the cameras internal memory when your main battery is out of the camera, it is a component of the PCB. The RO shows you included your camera battery with the body when submitted for the repair.
Glad it's working for you again. I kept mine until the repair warranty expired and then sold it.

I thought it was one of mine I didn't remember including one. I would be tempted to try the new 80D with a extended warranty of course

So now you have a spare Canon battery, that's probably worth about $80.Not a bad deal for a refurbished camera, except for the inconvenience of not having it while it was being repaired.
