Click the link below. This is from Steve Perry, who is also on UHH. Does a great job of explaining the use of BBF. I started using this method a few years ago and have never looked back!

Very true. I just slide the dial over to the little green box when asking someone to shoot. Works well most of the time.

BBF remains in effect in auto mode on my D7100; thus I set up U2 for "normal" focus (green box) when handing it to others.

Yeah, I guess the BBF function works differently on various camera models.

If you set up a back button for focusing, what do you have to do to prevent the shutter button from refocusing?

John, When you activate the back button for focusing, you also need to deactivate the shutter button for focusing. Two simple steps. Depending on your camera, you may also need to set your focus to continue focus and not one shot. It works so well but it take a little effort to get use to it. Best, J. Goffe

I beg to differ. My Canon 5DII goes back to normal shutter button focus on both Auto and CA modes. BBF is deactivated--very handy when asking someone else to take a photo.

Well, may be Canon is different, I don't know any thing about Canon, I would not comment on that. But if like you said, every time after you took a picture with BBF, the camera will automatic switch back to normal focusing-way with the half press the shutter. That's trouble, because you have to set or switch some way to go back to BBF. How often you need somebody to take a photo for you?
For me I keep the BBF plus M mode on all time on my Nikons. If I need someone to take picture for me, I will ask him or she to hold down the BBF and shoot with two fingers! AS i SAID, BBF is not related to any mode, I can use BBF with all the mode, mode is the different way of exposure, not focusing.

It would be a nice feature to remove on automatic. If Canon does that, nice touch indeed! Not selling my Nikon though!

I have used BBF on all my cameras for years and it is great. Works on Nikon D200, D90, D610 and D810 definitely and I would think on all of them.

If you are left eyed, the button placement is a hindrance. And if you use it for BIF, the multitasking involved becomes a hindrance for older minds .......

I agree. I'm trying hard to like it, but so far, it doesn't do much for me.

The way I deal with this is I never hand my camera to others.

Wing, the default setting on as Canon is that the BB does the same thing as the Shutter Button(SB) without making any adjustments at all. But to hold the BB down and have it continually track the camera has to be in Continuous Focus( AIservo) mode. The cameras can be configured many different ways using the BB but in the default setting, you use the BB and the SB exactly the same at any time and the SB is NOT disabled. But when using the BB the SB will not refocus the lens. ;-)
