So much for not taking pictures!!

I never get in the way of a school photographer, don't use flash and don't try to sell the pictures. The school photographers have even shared some tips and tricks with me. I go under the net for basketball and travel the sidelines for football, lacrosse and soccer.

You are right--everybody has a camera. Until and unless they ban ALL photography, don't even ask--just take pictures.

You need to go back and read through the thread... I have explained several times that, as a school district contractor/employee, I have to follow their rules and restrictions, no matter how crazy. They tell me to put my camera away, I say no, and the next morning I get fired... This was why I was frustrated enough to start the thread in the first place - anyone *else* can shoot away, but not me.

These people are little Hitlers, honestly... We have had drivers fired for wearing earphones, one for expressing displeasure over the 2-way radio. They forced the firing of a secretary when a background check revealed that she had once bounced a cheque! She is a parent, with several kids in the school system, and also has absolutely no contact with children at work - we work for a contractor, and we are several miles from the schools. They say "I don't want this person working for the district", and my boss is too scared of losing her contract to put up any kind of fight...

It looked like I might have been allowed to shoot home games, but in 2 weeks I have not been able to get a reply from the athletic director, and it also works out that, when the boys team is playing at home, for example, I have the girls team at their away game, and vice versa. So, not much happening on that front either!

I could be a school photographer for them... I already have all the background checks needed for working around the kids, I have good gear, and I work for free! How much better can it get? They just don't seem to give a big rat's bum...

Your first mistake was in asking for permission. It is easy to say no...beforehand, but much harder to prove wrongdoing afterwards. Taking photo's is not illegal....what you do with them afterwards may be ....but only if it is proved by a court of law.

For my part, I've attended only a handful of youth sports events, and had a similar experience, with cameras everywhere.

The OP of course suffers from his position as an employee whereby his bosses can deny his doing photography during such events.

Yet, let us say it: Doing photography is not a crime. At the same time, we must admit photography can intrude, but that is another story.

It seems that the problem is the "contractor", aka, dictator you work for. If you didn't pull up to the game in a school bus we wouldn't have a twelve page thread. I know as a former labor official that in the absence of a contract, you are just a puppet of the employer and can be discharged for any or no reason at all. Be smart and just try to shoot home games--good luck to you!

When it comes to photographing any children, you better know them and their parents well. Or you could be in for a surprise. I have a friend that was photographing surfers at the HB pier one hot summer day. He accidently pointed his camera at some teen aged girls and they started yelling and their fat assed mother pitched a fit and hollered for a policeman to investigate. The police inspected my friends camera, who was a retired LA County Deputy Sheriff, and found no pictures of the girls on his camera. But this is what you can expect these days.

Now could the police actually do anything about it? They might try something, but if taken to court I think the court's ruling would be in favor of the photographer because there's no expectation of privacy when in public places no matter how old you are or who you are. Celebrities try to stop photographers all the time and it can't be done when they are in the public eye. Why would it be any different for joe blow private citizen.

There’s nothing illegal about photographing anyone in public. It doesn’t matter if you’re photographing someone laying on the beach or surfing the waves. Also, you’re not required to show your pictures to a police officer unless there’s a search warrant.

Did you read the 12 pages of this 5 year old thread before posting? Just curious how you chose this old thread for your first post on UHH.

It's 2021 folks and times have changed.

Many decades ago, I worked on staff for a daily (Montreal) newspaper. On a slow news day in the hot summer months, the editors would send us out to shoot the kids enjoying the summer activities in the waterpark, playgrounds, the beach, or the schoolyards. The parents would ask when the pictures will be published and asked if they could get prints for themselves. Nowadas, I would not be caught dead in such venues with a camera in hand. I'm certain I would be set upon by angry "vigilantes"!

A few years ago, I was hired by an architect to do an EXTERIOR shot of a new school he had designed. I went to the location, set up for the shot and I was then accosted by a few of the school staff and an angry security guard. They SCREAMED at me "there are children inside- what are you doing?!!!". It was 2 in the afternoon and the was not a kid in sight. Good thing I had letters from the architect and the local school board- it seems someone on the school board forget to notify the school. Just as they were apologizing to me, the police pulled up some nitwit in the school called the cops. I am certain that if I was not big and ugly and had my "nasty expression on my face- I suffer from "perma-frown" that security guard was looking for a fight and ready to pounce!

I am a father, and a grandfather and I can understand all about protecting our kids and I want our school officials to operate with an abundance of caution but not act like a lynch mob! Sadly, there are many predators out there in the world but folks have developed some paranoid-like mindsets and many have begun to equate photography with pornography and worst of all, child pornography. Psychology is way above my paygrade so suffice it to say that some folks simply have their minds and thoughts in the toilet and project the sick thoughts on others!

In my professional work in portraiture, I love photographing babies and children. I studied under Joseph Schneider, years ago, and I gotta brag, I am very good at it- especially in motivating kids, capturing expressions and even gettg good results with difficult or very active subjects. I will only photograph children when hired by their parents or as a model on children's fashion shoots, accompanied by their parents and with enough paperwork and release form to fill an archive! Sports events with underage kids- only with all the aforementioned paperwork in hand and credentials from whatever amateur athletic organization or institution is sponsoring the event.

For someone to call a local school bus driver a "pervert" just because he wants to photograph some of the school's extra circulator activities is indeed disgusting and uncalled for. Unfortunately, it is a sign of the times.

My advice to the OP- if you are gonna volunteer your service to the school, make certain that all the parties concerned are fully apprised of your intentions and secure the permission and documentation thereof. In today's litigious and cancel-culture society, you need to take every precaution to protect your livelihood and legal security.

Yup- My mistake, I did not read the dateline! Sometimes I confuse it with the date the OP joined the forum- I'll be more observant in the future Sadly, however, there are many more current posts on this and other forums, of the same nature.

I don't know how many times, when I tell SOME folks that I am a professional photographer, they kinda smirk and ask me if I "shoot people in the nude", etc and I can only explain that I am fully clothed whenever I am at work and that mu price list is shocking enough and my clients seeing me naked would be way TOO MUCH for them to tolerate!

Well, perhaps folks are tired of the same old "Nikon vs. Canon, Shhoud I use Filters? and Is It Bad to Replace the Sky" posts that they are going to the forum cemetery and digging up dead threads. Might be?!

Well, I once mistakenly posted on an old thread and then realized I posted previously on the same thread, At least my opinion was consistent!

I am always looking to expand my skills, trying my hand at macro, portraits, HDR, etc. I recently upgraded my equipment quite a bit, and want to try my hand at sports photography.

First, a bit of background... I am a school bus driver, currently with more than 10 years on the job. This year, I have pulled back a bit, and am basically driving as a substitute, and taking field trips for the sports teams.

So, here I am, spending a couple of afternoons a week sitting on a bus, waiting for the teams to finish their games and come back, so I can run them back to school again.

Seems like a recipe for happiness, yes? Or at least serendipity...

Yesterday afternoon, I was to take our middle-school girl's basketball team to a neighboring school district. I know that some school districts are a bit 'peculiar' when it comes to photos of students (I had a discipline issue on the bus, and the mother of the culprit was called in to the school - she was not allowed to watch the video, because it portrayed other students...), so I called the school that we were to visit. The secretary wouldn't even consider the question, and passed me on to the principal, who of course was not at his desk, so I left a message. I explained that I was a bus driver, bringing the visiting teams for their games, and would like to photograph the games.

He never called back, or at least not until after I left. Someone on his staff *did* however, call the transportation director of this district, basically saying "why is this pervert wanting to take photos of our students?". My boss got a phone call that she really couldn't answer.

I was told that under no circumstances was I to enter their school building with a camera.

An administrator from the school we were visiting did eventually call back and leave me a message. Apparently, they only allow professional press photographers to take pictures of their games...

Do these people realize that every single person who comes to watch the games is carrying a camera in their phone??? Parents, friends, even other members of the team, are all snapping away on their cellphones. The kids on the team were all comparing their photos on the bus going back afterwards...

What kind of sick minds do these people have, that they can only think a pervert might want to take photos? I do this for my church, and occasionally for the local Y, when I run trips for their summer daycare. I am strictly amateur, and when I have processed the images, I drop off a CD, and tell them that they can pass pictures on to interested parents. My church pictures usually get posted on Facebook, and/or the church's own website.

So, here I am, wanting to take sports photographs, and I get to sit on the bus waiting for the kids to come out... I could go in, but I am only interested in the photography side, and have no real interest in the game, per se.

Anybody else come across this kind of stupidity???
I am always looking to expand my skills, trying my... (show quote)

I recommend this: Don't take pictures of children unless you have permission to do so from their parents. Don't mix photography with your bus driver job. Whining about this is not going to get you anywhere, except maybe fired.

Wow - I had no idea that this thread was still active after all this time. I told the schools that they could stuff my cameras up their... (well, in my head anyway!) I am no longer actively doing photography, due to health issues, and one of these days I will find somewhere to take pictures of my stuff and post it on here for sale.

I am still driving a school bus, although for this year I exchanged the big yellow beastie for a smaller van, and I am transporting special-needs students.
